“Wonderful food”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

We decided to have a break in Penzance and ended up eating here and we were not disappointed, they serve the most wonderful food,i had a ham hock pate with a red onion marmalade and a balsamic salad it was divine, followed by a trio of simple Cornish fish, one of which was red gurnard and it was one of the best meals we have had for a long time, the sauce was to die for as was the freshness of the ingredients.
My wife had a prawn and crab starter and hake with a crust and crushed new potatoes, the only thing that was wrong was the hake was slightly over cooked but not by much and it was still delicious, well done to the chef there he is amongst some of the best fish cooks in Cornwall.
I used to be a head chef myself so believe me this is worth a visit.

If you are in the Scottish Highlands and looking for a good nights sleep in a clean room with comfy bed plenty of coffee, tea, biscuits, bottles of water, fresh milk, and a good view from the window followed by a huge breakfast, 2 of everything, cereal, juice toast etc served by friendly staff leaving you to enjoy your day in Cornwall or a boat trip to the Scillys knowing good food will be waiting for you on your return then pop down to the Dolphin Tavern at Penzance. You may think you had to go a long way to find a place like this- and thats the point, you do.

I live in Cornwall and when we're having a drive down that way myself and partner usually end up here as we know the food's good. They serve all day too! I usually have the vegetarian lasagne which comes with really nice garlic bread and a fairly large side salad in a bowl with all sorts in, not your usually boring lettuce leaf. Very tasty! My partner goes for the sizzling chicken which comes out on a hot skillet, sizzling! I'm vegetarian and there are a few choices for me but the other choices are very wide, also a specials board. Everyone's food that comes out looks very nice and well prepared. The chef seems very good for such a normal type of pub. I'm normally a fussy eater but i never have a problem here! Prices are reasonable too.The only thing i would say is that the waitress was very miserable last time, maybe a bad day but she didn't break a smile the whole time we were there and it took ages for the tables to get cleared from people's previous meals.
Worth popping in if you're around that area.

We ate there three times on our holiday in Penzance, which should say it all. The service was quick, there was a good choice of fresh food and dogs are welcome.

The pub is on the quay and there are some tables (on the street) outside as well - it is worth booking as they get very busy from about 6pm, although if you are prepared to wait at the bar they normally fit you in, even at the height of the season.

Stayed at the Dolphin for one night before taking the Scillonian over to the Isles of Scilly. Lovely room overlooking the harbour, bath was large and deep and loads of hot water. Comfy bed and didn't hear a thing from the bar beneath. Had dinner there and could not fault it, had a couple of pints of Tribute to wash it down. Extensive menu including several vegetarian options and also specials on the board.. Breakfast was very good and the chef had time for a chat. Although the pub was busy in the evening we were there , the staff were friendly and had time for us - would thoroughly recommend this pub if you are in Penzance and really handy if you are taking a trip to the Isles of Scilly on the morning sailing. Large public car park just a few minutes along the harbour is convenient to leave the car whilst at the pub/on the Isles of Scilly. All round, a great place to stay.

Lovely meal at the Dolphin. The steak sizzler was cooked just right and the restaurant was clean. Booking highly recommended as we couldn't get a table at the beginning of our holiday. Staff were fine, service was good but maybe could have been a bit more friendly, they were busy but just didn't seem to smile a lot! Overall a pleasant evening.
