“Good Base for Newquay Holiday”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Coach trip from Isle of Wight was fine and driver very professional. Hotel was ok and you get what you pay. Food needs a change to include pasta and rice. However it was ok and no need to go hungry. The hotel mainly caters for the elderly but we are more hip than hip replacement so used it as a base. We did the pubs locally and no problem getting back late. Newquay it self is in need of re-generation as pavements, shop fronts, toilets and dossers let it down. However some of the pubs were excellent especially the new Gribbar and the Great Western. We had a good time and will go back to this hotel as it is good value and the coach is the cheapest way to get there from the IOW.

The title says it all. The journey was taken on a coach that would be more suitable in a museum, the seats were cramped and uncomfortable. Our Driver was fine. Our hotel room was small, tatty and unbearably hot. The weather was very hot, but to use such a small stuffy room in the roof and provide it with only one opening window (didn't open anywhere near enough) and a small fan, which we had to request, is disgusting. The menu was poor and unimaginative and the portions were small and served at at olympian speeds. The only saving grace about the restaurant was our delightful waiter who always had a smile and friendly word. We are not over fussy, we just wanted a short break with decent food and a nice room to relax in, and we had neither at the Barrowfield. This is a distinctly second rate hotel and not worth three stars. Badly needs a make-over. Preferably with a bulldozer!

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 300 unless you can tolerate temperatures of 85 degrees and have a love of sea...

We hadn't been to Newquay for 10yrs so thought it was about time we went again as we loved our last stay.
We booked our holiday via Daish' travel who were very friendly and the coach driver was also brilliant. Upon arrival at the Barrowfield the first thing we noticed was the hotel is not near to sea but near to the cliffs therefore no evening walks along the seafront!
The receptionist was a little short but ok. Upto our room on the third floor (320) - the room was extremely disappointing although it had everything you would need during your stay. The double bed to one side and the single (for my 8yr old) at the other with a tv hanging above it! Not a good idea especially didn't like to idea of my daughter sleeping in the bed just incase the tv fell! The bathroom was clean but awful - damp around the bath and floor tiles ripped at one side.
The room was cleaned everyday but the bedding was not and neither were the table-cloths in the dining room so by the end of the week the table was covered in stains!
We had 3 windows in our room as it was very hot whilst there but only one would open, the other only if jammed open and the third not at all hence too warm on a night.
During our stay we found all the staff extremely pleasant, especially Mr Cornish the hotel manager, the pool was really nice, the food acceptable although not to the standard of the Isle of Wight hotel but not as bad as some of the comments left by others. Newquay itself is not the same anymore - rough is not the word but that is not the hotels fault lol!
Overall I would rate our stay as acceptable - ok if you aren't too fussy but if you are expecting high décor/facilities maybe not for you.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front quieter as the rooms to the back seem to have sea-gulls lodging too!

Our first time travelling with Daish.
The journey from Suffolk was very long the breaks too short.
The hotel was very clean and had recently been refurbished, our beds were a disaster (springs sticking into you)., But after complaining the staff put an extra padding on the mattress so they weren't too bad.
The hotel really needs air conditioning, we were lucky with the weather it was beautiful, but made the hotel, especially the restaurant and bedroom unbearable hot.
The food was adequate, but choices limited especially the breakfasts.
We were mislead by the wine waiter on the cost of the bottles of wine we were told that we could have a ''couple of bottles for £9.25'' this turned out to be the price per bottle, rather overpriced for a very mediocre wine.
On conclusion, the majority of the staff were very pleasant there was one exception who seemed to have a chip on his shoulder.

Daish's have got to be admired for their organisation, quality of staff and enthusiasm. Our bus trip from Nottingham to Newquay was a long one, but there were plenty of breaks and the driver resisted the usual non stop banter, just enough information, friendly and humorous.

As mentioned scaffolding was in place, but was being removed as work on the roof was complete. Our room (212) was large, clean, modern TV, all the bits you would normally expect. OK, those guys from four in a bed might have found fault, but we were happy.
Breakfast is as mentioned on other comments, (the sausage will never win an award). But you can have kippers, porridge, a range of cereals, fruit, yogurts, toast galore. If you want poached eggs, a boiled egg, they will do it for you.
Waiters are friendly, accommodating and quick. Its all done very smoothly, so a three course meal is done in twenty minutes. You choose at breakfast what you want for dinner. Not perfect, but it works.
Meals are OK, not al-a-cart, not huge portions, but enough. My only two moans were bones in the fish and boiled potato's with the skin on. A pain was the appearance of the manager at every meal to announce something or other in the most cringe worthy, patronising manner, (but to be fair, he was a hard working chap). Entertainment was good, John Smiths £3, wine £9 to £12 a bottle. Very good bar staff, although the bar closes at 11pm, which is odd for an hotel.
You either love or hate bingo, there was only a couple of games, split early and late, done by whomever is on the bill that night. Plenty of seats and tables outside the stage/ dance floor area if you don't like being entertained.
The pool is really warm and often empty. A little bar is open at lunch time, it serves food at very reasonable prices.
We went on the Falmouth trip, the cruise up the river is well worth the extra £7, The cider farm was not an hard sell and quite pleasant.
So if you are 45 to 85 and not a fusspot you will be at home here.

Room Tip: Its an oldish building and the floors creak and some people seem to need to get up early and some li...

We visited this hotel on 15/5/23 and we were nearly put off by the hotel covered in scaffolding.
However we found the hotel to be clean and all staff very friendly although waitresses and waiter
could do with a little more training. We also had to be kept waiting while it seemed preferential
treatment were given to a couple on our next table who we were told were regulars even though
we were seated sometime before they arrived for meals. Full marks to the Manager however who
was very obliging. In spite of the above a nice hotel and enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: We would recommend not having rooms anywhere near the lift. Also to choose top floor rooms.
