“great value for money”
Reviewed July 16, 2010

when you read the review of old you do have to ask yourself what people expect for the money. If you are comparing this to a 5* then it isn't but location is excellent, food is excellent and hotel is clean and tidy. For the money this is 5* value. Would definately go back to this hotel which is 50metres from the beach and 5 min walk to centre.

The staff were helpful, nothing was too much trouble for waiting staff. The rooms were clean & the food excellent with plenty of choice.

Hotel needs complete modernisation, a rabbit warren of rooms and dodgy floorboards everywhere upstairs (also a really odd narrow passage with a ramp on the floor). Our room had a pink 1970's bath, and advocado loo in the bathroom and a pink basin in the bedroom. Basic but clean and 10 mins walk from local Wetherspoons, 5 mins walk from Tolcarne beach. Good views over the bay. Food was reasonable, though limited choice, the coffee was awful. Service was good when female waitress on or the duty manager but poor when young man was serving...ask for tea you got coffee, ask for custard you got icecream! To be fair we spent little time in the hotel apart from to eat and sleep and found our trip to be good value for money on National Holiday's

Don't be put off by the moans, I really don't know what people expect for the money nowadays, but we are regular visitors to Newquay and found this to be far better than some of the other hotels we have stayed in (for a much lower price too) The staff were really friendly, couldn't have been more helpful, the room was clean and nicely decorated, (with an amazing view of the sea from our room but no complaints from the people in our party who didn't get a sea view) and the food was amazing (look out for the puddings - lovely) I will def. recommend to the family and friends that weren't with us this time - we're all regular visitors to Cornwall - and we will be booking to go back this summer.

stayed here on a National Coach holiday, supporting a guy with learning disabilities, though the staff were excellent and the food was good, and our fellow travellers were a great bunch of people the hotel is very tired and needs a total refurb. I paid a supplement for a single room and was appalled at the quality of the room, it was a single room so why a supplement, I thought supplements were for under occupancy of a twin/double room, maybe a mistake on my part, but honestly the ensuite was so small I had to put my feet in the bath to sit on the toilet, as I say the staff were friendly but the general condition of the hotel left much to be desired

stayed at this hotel as part of coaching holiday with national holidays, on arrival met by staff who were helpfull and courteous, rooms were old looking but clean, had clean towels daily, nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the man on reception Ray i think his name was, stayed here with my 16 year old grand daughter and although most of the guest like myself were elderly she also enjoyed herself and is thinking about coming back next year with her friend. I found the choice of food at both breakfast and evening meal good and plenty of it, if you asked for extra you got it, no trouble. The evening entertainment was good. the only bad mark here would be the takeaway sandwiches not edible at all, ham was grey looking and for £2.50 not value for money. Overall very enjoyable..

We were fortunate to have a side room ( with sea view) ,some of our party, with rooms at the front of the hotel, found them rather noisy with passing revellers at night. Our room was clean and the beds and linen were spotlessly clean - and we both commented on the comfort of both bed and pillows.Towels were changed daily if you so required.
The food was very good, the evening menu was posted in the entrance area at the end of dinner each day so you could "plan" the next evening meal. There was a "chef''s special" for main course each evening, often featuring local caught fish. Good choice for vegetarian guests. Food was plentiful and well cooked, wjth ample fresh fruit and vegetables. The evening meal was excellent value for money. Service in the dining room was fast and efficient - many larger, more expensive, hotels could take a lesson or two from these staff!
The full breakfast was very good, food was piping hot, egg cooked to perfection - no grease evident and bacon very lean and of good quality.
The staff at this hotel are all very friendly and helpful, any requests were cheerfully dealt with.
The hotel is in need of some updating refurbishment - but if you value hospitality, comfort and value for money - plus good food, in a seafront location it would be hard to beat!
