Owner description: From the local Cornish coast to the dazzling beauty of the Tropical Reef, Newquay Blue Reef aquarium has an exciting world of underwater adventure waiting to be discovered. More than 40 innovative displays vividly bring to life the sights, sounds and smells of the sea, whilst regular feeding displays, rock-pool workshops and informative talks provide a fun and fascinating day out. Visitors can enjoy the closest of undersea encounters with amazing aquatic life including seahorses, giant octopus, pulsating Jellyfish and fierce Piranha. At the aquariums heart is a spectacular coral reef display housed within a 250,000 litre ocean tank - home to exotic tropical species like black tip reef sharks and Omiros the rescued loggerhead turtle. As well as hundreds of brightly-coloured reef fish and a huge Southern Stingray. Enjoy the sheer beauty of the display by taking a journey through its very own underwater tunnel, as well as through a number of viewing portholes, a floor to ceiling window and even enjoy close encounters from the surface - where Omiros often likes to pop up to say hello! Situated on Towan Promenade in the heart of Newquay, Blue Reef Aquarium not only offers a beach on its doorstep but also an amazing experience, whatever the weather!

Quite good, quite expensive, fairly short of an experience for a tenner a piece. Some cool fish though

To be honest you might as well visit your local aquatic shop for free for the same thrill.

It's a limited collection of small (domestic sized in most cases) tanks featuring this or that creature. No overall habitat/ecosystem recreation. Oh and a tank with a few dwarf caiman and a tank where you can walk under a couple of small sharks. My three year old who is endlessly fascinated with the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth was "finished" in a matter of minutes. Unimpressive!

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear you were dissapointed with your visit. We are quite a small aquarium but pride ourselves on the variety and quality of the exhibits we have here. We use use real plants and propogate our own corals to theme our tanks ensuring the creatures have naturally recreated habitats to demonstrate natural behaviour where they can be comfortable whilst showing our visitors the diverse range of aquatic habitats. Our largest display is our 250,000 litre tunnel tank featuring our Black Tip Reef Sharks as well as 4 other species of bottom dwelling sharks, southern stingrays, tropical reef fish and Omiros, our rescued Loggerhead Turtle. Other displays contain native rockpool creatures and offshore fish, freshwater reptiles, axolotyls and larger freshwater fish as well as our Giant Pacific Octopus, Jellyfish and Seahorses plus many different varieties of tropical marine fish! We do offer unlimited returns all day so visitors can revisit our displays and return to see any of our talks and feeds throughout the day, currently 5 on weekdays and 7 at weekends.

This attraction cost myself and partner over £20 in entrance fees, and although the Aquarium was interesting, there were not enough tanks to justify the money. We enjoyed our visit but it lasted for just over an hour, again not justifying the money we spent on entrance.

On a rainy day in Cornwall we decided to have a "day out" at the Blue Reef Aquarium. In fact I'm sitting in their cafe writting this review. We parked nearby and walked to the aquarium and our group of four adults, 1 child and 1 under three approached the counter to pay. We were asked for £27. Quite reasonable I thought. We then walked through the gate and was stopped. "You all want to go in?" He seemed surprised that we would all want to pay for and take part in this "day out". We were then asked for an additional £17.50 (we had vouchers for £1 off each). Well, it for a "day out" so we didn't mind paying the money for a couple of hours of exciting fishy fun! 30 minutes later we'd had the excitment of seeing the same tank from three different angles! We then saw the sign saying that we had found the exit and the shop. Errrrmmm.... Did I read everything too fast? Did I not spend long enough staring at the wondrous jelly fish? Surely the price indicated something of value like a 4d cinema, a fascinating history of the fish experience or MORE FISH. Ohhhhh. We can come back as many times we like today? Awesome. Is there going to be extra things brought in for my second, third and fourth visit?

To summarise the place is interesting however vastly over priced for the size. Luckily we brought our own lunch so were only ripped off for two drinks in the cafe (£2.25 for 500ml of tango). I spent more time writing and editing this review on my phone than walking around the aquarium. I just did a lap without stopping to take a photo and the steady walk from entrance to exit took 70 seconds!
