Owner description: From the local Cornish coast to the dazzling beauty of the Tropical Reef, Newquay Blue Reef aquarium has an exciting world of underwater adventure waiting to be discovered. More than 40 innovative displays vividly bring to life the sights, sounds and smells of the sea, whilst regular feeding displays, rock-pool workshops and informative talks provide a fun and fascinating day out. Visitors can enjoy the closest of undersea encounters with amazing aquatic life including seahorses, giant octopus, pulsating Jellyfish and fierce Piranha. At the aquariums heart is a spectacular coral reef display housed within a 250,000 litre ocean tank - home to exotic tropical species like black tip reef sharks and Omiros the rescued loggerhead turtle. As well as hundreds of brightly-coloured reef fish and a huge Southern Stingray. Enjoy the sheer beauty of the display by taking a journey through its very own underwater tunnel, as well as through a number of viewing portholes, a floor to ceiling window and even enjoy close encounters from the surface - where Omiros often likes to pop up to say hello! Situated on Towan Promenade in the heart of Newquay, Blue Reef Aquarium not only offers a beach on its doorstep but also an amazing experience, whatever the weather!

“Small but perfectly formed.”

I agree with previous reviews that the aquarium would be pricey for walk-up tickets with the whole family. I visited with my 13 year-old daughter, so 1 adult & 1 child. We used a voucher on my phone from Vouchercloud app and both got in for £13.25. I know you can use Tesco Days Out tokens. You can get re-admission to the aquarium all day on the ticket.
There was a queue to get in, but the staff brought some rockpool specimens into the lobby and gave a talk to entertain the kids while waiting.
I would say we spent just over an hour looking around and really enjoyed it - we loved the baby jellies and the stone fish & seahorses. People who say it only takes a minute to look around probably aren't that interested. We have been to the big aquariums in Plymouth and Birmingham and I think this one is quite good. If your children are younger, their attention might wander in a larger venue anyway.

“Aquarium that ticks all the boxes.”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

Visited to Blue reef aquarium in Newquay today as the wind had blown out the surf. Best decision I made. I had a brilliant afternoon! There are all sorts of exhibits both showcasing local Sea Life as well as more exotic species, everything from weaver fish to crocodiles, giant lobsters to baby Sea horses. There were also all sorts of tiny fry hatched and in special tanks for growing. Then there was the Octopus feeding time which was amazing especially when he tried climbling out of his tank over the staff member, hilarious. A bit later on they also fed the sharks and the massive sting rays which was real sight to behold. I really like the fact you can get so close to all the exhibits and there was something for everyone, the kids were transfixed by the weird and wonderful and were overjoyed to see the massive old lobster coming out to eat his tea. The blue reef aquarium was not only fun but also a real learning experience for all. Great value and an experience not to be missed for all the family.

“O.K. but a tad over priced.”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Visited here during the rainy bank holiday Monday as something to do indoors. It was just ok. Was around £30 for something you could walk through in less than a minute.

“Small, expensive but good”
Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

We went along on a wet day along with hordes of other people - so make sure you visit early, or expect a long queue to get in. Despite the queue the aquarium itself wasn't overly full which was good. The aquarium is small and doesn't have a huge amount to see, but what there was was good and interesting. However I felt the price was far too high for the size of the venue. Worth doing? Only if you have had a series of wet days and run out of things to do!

a very very poor place for familys value for money wise!,,,,expensive entry tho once inside it takes well less than 30 mins to go round and see it all,,what they have is great,,tho its just not enough! your better off taking them to morrisons fish counter and giving the kids a tenner each after,,,itll save you money!
you seem to walk back out and a sudden sense of "HOW MUCH??????" pops into your head!
