“Good Value Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2011

I spent a four day Christmas break at the Kilbirnie with my husband and 83 year old father. Hotel staff were very friendly and restaurant service was excellent. There were choices of starters, main courses and a sweet followed by coffee and mints, the food was delicious and couldn't fault it. We had a sea view room which was clean with clean towels every day. Tea and coffe in rooms but a bit mean with the tea bags (1 each a day). Bed and pillows were a bit hard and the duvet wasn't big enough for the bed. Ensuite old but adequate.

Entertainment was good on the last night with "In Dreams" who was brilliant and everyone joined in. Previous nights not so good and lots of people just left and went back to their rooms so that it lacked atmosphere.

The break was good value for money and I certainly would not hesitate to go back to the Kilbirnie again next Christmas or during the summer months. The hotel is right near Lusty Glaze Beach so summer months would be good. The hotel is not situated right in the heart of Newquary so no noise but you can easily walk into the town within five minutes so good location.

The hotel has a small indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi which were lovely and warm for the winter months.

As some of you may have read previous reviews and/or my profile, you will see that I travel and stay all over the world and at differing levels of luxury.

I do not 'over expect' and found the Radio 2 (Jeremy Vine) show last week interesting and not surprised that Hotels don't like sites like these. Well, that's because they can not fob you off with a 'meal offer' if you are not happy - that was the end result from my horrific experience with The Village Hotel, Bury ... why would I want to go back to a hotel that gave such poor service!!!

Anyway, time to tell you about The Kilbirnie Hotel .... Firstly, book direct as I am sure the deal would have been better than via Late Rooms!!

We traveled with elderly parents so took advantage of the disabled room on the ground floor, whilst I had a first floor room overlooking the outdoor pool.

The welcome was warm and delightful, very traditional seaside (large) hotel.

We booked dinner in the restaurant on the first night and were impressed with the speed of service and quality of the food.

The dining room is huge but easily managed by the staff. Silverware on the table was a nice touch and the humour of the waiters was well balanced to meet each guest.

They have an indoor pool and hot tub (nice way to start the day), plus the beach is only minutes away. Check out the tide times when you visit, because at low tides you can walk all along the sand .... outstanding way to start of end the day too.

You are far enough away from town not to get noise, but close enough to visit.

Overall, it was a very nice experience and would recommend it to others.

I stayed here for 3 nights at the hotel,my first impression from outside was it looked bigger than i thought it would, the reception was a bit old fashioned....The staff were polite apart from 1 person who seemed to be huffing every time he walked past after having spoke to a customer when serving breakfast which only happened on 1 day...our room was a family room,it was really clean and spacious..we did request a seaview room when booking, unfortunately they were unable to fufil the request, our view was of the bar and balcony with deck chairs but we could see a view to the side which was lovely.Their was no entertainment provided to keep the kids entertained or the adults...the kids either went swimming or played pool....Their wasnt much else for them to do,they got quite bored in the hotel as it rained for 2 days that we were there..
The breakfast was ok,i was surprised their was no fruit being served on any of the days..Parking was good,i always got a space. The only problem we had was getting woken up by the people above us at 5am every morning, you could hear the kids running about and people walking around,it sounded like really bad creeaking floor boards and our matresses were not very comfortable and the room was quite cold, the heating never seemed to come on and we couldnt dry the kids towels when we came back from the beach, the laundry room shuts at 7pm,other than that i would say the stay was average. Its location is about 10 mins to newquay town centre and close to most of the beaches and zoo. When i go back to cornwall i would probably try somewhere else to stay rather than the same hotel....

The hotel is located on the main rd on the way into the town centre very close to Tolcarne beach. The staff were very attentive on arrival and even allowed us to check in earlier than expected because they had the room ready, which was a big plus for us. On the whole our experience of the hotel was a good one. We used the indoor pool which was great for our 10yr old, the pool table kept him happy, there is also and outside pool and terrace if weather permits, so all good there. The restaurant offers silver servce at dinner which was nice, the food was not fantastic but was good enough for £16 for 3 courses, the waiting on staff were great, very attentive but not too much.Breakfast was a decent selection of the ususal cereals, toast , croissants, fruit etc Plus full english or variation of if you want it and all served to you by the staff. Our room was modern, clean, with a decent enough bathroom. A bit tight on the complimentary tea coffee in the room but so what. We paid £80 for B &B for 1 night for 2 adult & 1 child, we paid the extra for dinner (child half price we found when settling the bill ) In my opinion the Kilbirne gave us value for Money and we had a great time in Newquay. And yes, i would stay there again !

The Kilbernie was spotlessly clean and the food was very good. The hotel was cold and at times so cold our room felt and smelt damp. We asked for portable heater that was declined then offerred a south facing room that was equally as cold.
Although there were children in the hotel they did not provide any form of entertainment.
Overall a pleasant break for the family but we would not stay at the Kilbernie again or recommend it to families with children.

We have been visiting the Kilbirnie over many years and yes, of course, like anywhere you can get blips but we, my husband and I, absolutely love it. Reasons, well its always very clean "everywhere" and staff are always helpful and friendly. If you do have a problem of any sort they are always quick to try and sort it even to the point of changing your room(obviously if available). The food is brilliant and the breakfast very substantial which keeps you going for the day "I love their porridge, it just tastes different from home stuff. The evening menu is so varied you are sometimes spoilt for choice and they do superb salads with "real" cold meat (not the rubbery sort). We have always found the kitchen staff , waiters and waitress's always very efficient and quick to take your order, also that it is open until 8pm for dining at night so you do not have to rush down at six or seven. If you want a sea view across the bay from your window ask for this when booking and for a small extra price they will book this for you. There is always complimentary newspapers available and you can sit down with pleasure in the lounge or the bar area and relax. I found very helpful their little laundry (auto washer and dryer and ironing facilities) on the second floor which is free of charge and easy to use. The swimming pool I absolutely adored and it was warm and easy to get out with tiled steps from the pool. There is also an outdoor pool for the summer , sauna and jacuzzi, which I must admit (thejacuzzi) was out of order last time but I have used it in the past and it was fine. Parking is ok plenty of it at the front and back of the Hotel. Tea and coffee in the bedrooms I have always found have been fine, never had to pay for little extras. I know it looks like everything is totally rosy but I do know they have started to up date a lot of the rooms (we stayed in one last time) and it was very impressive So "I'm sorry" I can't help it - We just love it and always (me) feel sad to leave. Well I always feel sad to leave Cornwall. I think God planted me in the wrong area!

This Hotel was brill. Good location, across from the beach and about a ten minute walk to Newquay town. The staff at the hotel were very friendly, felt sorry for the receptionist who seemed to be doing the reception and the bar! But she was very nice. Breakfast staff not so nice.. not horrible either, just hardly really spoke. Rooms were fine with comfy beds.Overall a good few days, and would stay here again.
