“A very odd experience”
Reviewed October 28, 2009

We stayed three nights at our usual Headland Hotel but fancied an extra night in Newqay so decided to go for a night at the Atlantic. This was a very strange experience! We were swayed to stay there for our love of sushi and found out that there was a sushi restaurant there. We booked online and turned up to check in.
First thing we were told - No sushi restaurant available. (Not good).
We entered our room which cannot be knocked, it was plush, nice tv, black out curtains, mini bar and the most comfortable bed in the world. Great bathroom too, small bath, but all fine.
Then, we decided a nice drink from the mini bar would be fun. Most of the spirits were emptied and replaced with different concoctions (some looked like water from the toilet) so alerted staff who apologized and fumbled around to find the best replacement they could offer.
Which leads me to the whole problem with this hotel..... the staff. They are appalling and are out of their league with such a big hotel. Nobody knows what they are doing and are very unprofessional in every aspect. The girls on reception do their best, but could be better. The varying managers that come and go are vague, to say the least.
The most disturbing member of staff is the night manager - very odd and unnerving. My partner went downstairs to ask how to control the high temperature in our room and he could not help, but was very keen to try and get into the room to see me (I am female and was in bed), all in all it was a bit odd, to say the least.
We also tried to get room service at 10pm as we fancied a snack but we were told the chefs had gone, so NO. Nothing available at all..... how hard is it for someone to throw a sandwich together?!
So I have mixed views. The room was so welcoming and comfortable (I presume this is a refurbished room), had a great nights sleep and the breakfast was fine. Everything else, quite frankly, was appalling! Great for a stopover if you don't want any extras. Don't expect anything other than a very comfortable room.

On holiday with husband, Mum and Dad in Devon and we went to Eden project - decided to stay over in Newquay and we stayed in Atlantic hotel for one night B&B.
We stayed in the refurbished rooms - £85 per person per night. We had a room that overlooked the coast, it was spacious and very comfortable. Fab tv and a great bathroom only let down by the fact it wasnt a power shower!
I dont know about the standard rooms and we didnt check out reviews before we went - which i can see there has been some negative reviews but all in all we didnt experiance any of those. Hotel under big refurbishment so maybe they are trying best to get it to higher std for the cost.
We had a great meal in the restaurant at night and a lovely breakfast in the morning, staff helpful and good service.
We would return if ever back in Newquay.

Hotel was nice on first impression, quite old with high ceilings.
We went for a swim in the pool which seemed ok but on closer inspection was dirty, the sauna was going to cost £3 which doesnt sound alot but it was £85 per night and was boasting about trying to acheive 4 star rating so dont think you should really have to pay extra!
The jacuzzi smelt of an eggy sulphur smell and the water was a tinge of green, didnt look very well maintained.
The snooker room stunk badly of damp.
The mini bar in our room had 15! drinks past there sell by date(some were a year out)!
My friends room also had the same so am asuming the rest of hotel was similar.
When we questioned reception they said they would change them, this took over 24hours!!
We asked to see the manager on checkout but they kept making excuses that she was in a wedding, which might be true but she would not speak to us or call us.
The toiletries were not adequate, the shampoo was enough for 1 wash for 1 person and there was 2 of us in the room for 2 nights, these were never replenished.
The rest was ok and the breakfast was very nice but on hindsight the bad far outweighed the good and for £85 per night would not stay here or recommend to anyone.

We stayed in a plush room with fantastic view across the beach and cliffs. This place is RIGHT on the cliff! Had a plasma screen in my room, massive bath tub... spot on.

Slightly dated rooms, but if you get a seaview it more than makes up for it.Hotel showing its age now but still a good locatin over looking newquay but far enough away from the lager louts etc.Take a walk down the hill and go to the first pub on the left if you want a bite to eat with a little atmosphere,or carry on down to the St Austel pub 100m further on for a drink outside and a nice view....usually a good selection of specials on as well.....

We saw a few negative reviews here and were a little concerned, however on arrival we were shown our newly refurbished room which was fantastic, really clean, elegant, stylish and possibly the largest room we have ever stayed in. The staff are very helpful and genuine and the meal we had in the restaurant was wonderful. We will certainly return and will recommend this lovely relaxing place.
