We decided to try out the Atlantic after a break of 30 years, during which time we have regularly stayed at the neighboring Headland Hotel. We were very impressed. From the start the staff were extremely friendly both on reception and in the restaurants. The food was first-class and, although there were several functions taking place during our stay we were not inconvenienced in any way. Although a bit modern for our tastes it is still a superb hotel.

Room Tip: Our room, although sea-facing, looked out onto a flat roof which obstructed the view to an extent.

We stayed at the Atlantic earlier this year and we could not believe the price of the rooms. The rooms were around the same price as the neighboring Headland Hotel (which we have stayed in many times) but far inferior in every way. We decided to give another hotel a go, what a mistake! We were greeted with miserable staff and the whole atmosphere was plain awful. I must say, it's in a great location and the views are superb, but when your paying a 4 star price you expect a 4 star room and service, we had neither.

Upon arriving at the hotel we thought the whole thing could have done with a new coat of exterior paint, it looked dirty and moldy and obviously has not been painted in quite a while. We were totally disappointed with this hotel, mainly because of the price and the way the staff made us feel very unwelcome. Will never stay again!

I came here for a romantic break away with my partner and we had such a wonderful time! We booked a superior double room and it was huge with beautiful views of the beach! The bed was massive and incredibly
comfy, everything was spotless! on the first night we went down and had a meal at the bistro, the food was stunning and the dining room was really romantic! The breakfasts were lovely and the room was huge so all the tables were nicely spread out, the chef greeted us each morning and was really friendly and made the best eggs! Will definitely be returning!

Have just spent the Easter break at this lovely hotel. We come here every year and everytime we come it gets better and better. We always have the same room as the sea view is spectacular. The room is very spacious for our family and the bathroom is lovely. The only criticism I have with the bathroom is that, although the shower is exceptionally big, the water pressure is pitiful, which makes having a shower not a very nice experience. The breakfast is outstanding and the chef is very very friendly and accommodating. We didn't eat in Silks Bistro but every afternoon after a full day out exploring Cornwall, we would sit in Silks and have a bottle of wine and some tapas. It was lovely to sit there and just people watch and look at the lovely views. The kids used the pool and the one thing that wasn't very good was that the pool wasn't heated very well, we did inform the staff and it seemed to warm up just before we were leaving. I do feel that the pool area lets the hotel down, it is very dated and doesn't live up to the rest of the hotel. I love the way they have decorated and furnished the hotel. The only two areas that do not do the hotel justice are bar area which is very very dated and the ballroom is very dated. It looks like it belongs to a different hotel. Whenever we stay there the bar area is never used or the ballroom, and it seems very lifeless in that part of the hotel. All in all I would say that this hotel is one of the best we have stayed in and we stay in lots of hotels and always like to stay in four star hotels. The only thing that I find strange is that we do stay here every year but you are never welcomed back with any familiarity. I know that the staff would never remember you personally, but their records should show that we are returners and you would think that there should be some sort of welcome, such as a complimentary drink in Silks or in the room, to show they appreciate your loyalty.

We stayed at the Atlantic Hotel very recently; it was our second visit. The vista is unparalleled and the rooms were excellent. The staff were friendly and the breakfast extensive. The evening meal we had in Silks Bistro was very good. So, why the poor rating? I believe that customer service does not end as soon as you leave the hotel, and have paid your bill. I believe that asking for a credit card payment for the return of a forgotten lightweight item, totally undermines the spirit of being made to feel special and valued whilst you are staying at the Atlantic Hotel. It is a short-sighted policy which leaves a nasty taste in the mouth. What a shame, it could have been so different.

We had to visit Cornwall on business for a few days last week and - purely on the basis of the Internet - we chose to stay at the Atlantic. A better decision has rarely been taken.

The first thing I need to say is that it is a massively refurbished and modernised Victorian hotel with some sumptuous public rooms, a lovely dining room, some new bedrooms and refurbished ones.

But good hotels are about far more than decor and furniture and this one matches up to the best in all the major categories.

Unlike most large four star hotels in the land, the Atlantic has fully recognised the central lesson that it is good food, good service and good beds that keep customers, rather than chrome and marble entrance halls and flashy furniture (although the Atlantic has these too). The food at the Atlantic is extremely good - and, as someone who has stayed at literally hundreds of hotels, I know whereof I speak. I’m not talking over-hyped gourmet, designer-eating but excellent quality across a varied main menu and a lengthy specials selection which changes every day. I have also to extend my undying gratitude to the owners for sticking to a good quality breakfast offering. The orange juice is real, not from a carton, the bread is of good quality (not the cardboard stuff you get even in some “good” hotels these days), and the menu for the hot breakfast consists of local Cornish sausages, good quality bacon and a whole host of other good ingredients.

Oh, and try the afternoon tea too. The hotel has a lovely bistro area in which you can lounge in comfortable seats and spoil yourself with scones and cream and jam.

The newer rooms - in which we stayed - are of a good size and well furnished, and the beds are very comfortable.

So, all those things are great but perhaps the very best thing about the Atlantic is its staff. Absolutely without exception they were friendly and helpful in the most genuine way. Somehow the owners or the manager have managed to attract a set of very competent young staff whose approach is actually genuinely friendly and relaxed (rather than those “how-may-we-help-you” false smiles that one receives in most places these days). I’m not kidding - the staff actually want to help and they are good at it!

Sure there are things I would change if I could, but the good things about the Atlantic easily outweigh any minor niggles. Business trips are never really things that one enjoys but the Atlantic made this one seem almost like a holiday - and that’s the best compliment I can give it.

By the way, I am not related to anyone at the Atlantic - owners, managers, or other staff - and this was the first time in my life I have ever been to Newquay. A good hotel is something very rare and we should all try to support the few that are still around.

Dear ThomasGent
Thank you for your recent review, we are so pleased that we could make your business trip such an enjoyable one and almost feel like a holiday. It’s lovely to read your kind comments regarding the high standard of food in breakfast and that you enjoyed the freshly squeezed orange juice, it really does make a difference. I will be sure to pass your comments onto to hotels owners and all staff; being a family run business they are all so pleased to receive positive feedback.
I hope that you will return to the Atlantic Hotel again when you can get the chance to treat yourselves to a true holiday.
