My partner and I went on a 7 day holiday with National Holidays on the 26th August 2012 to the Marina Hotel. The hotel needs a complete refurbishment as the interior is very outdated, not in the 21st century. While we were there painting was being done inside and out, so NO T.V. lounge only a small lounge big enough for 9 people (not good). Our room showed signs of damp on the ceiling in the bay window and the there was a hole at the side of the pelmet casing where dirt was coming down onto the chair/floor below. Bathroom very compact and outdated, washbasin in bedroom (not very nice), the toilet did not flush properly. The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, when you turned over in the night they made a noise, woke you up. Our room attendant Trish looked after is very well and Sadie our waitress was excellent and went out of her way for us. Our coach driver John was very kind, well mannered and good at his job. The food and entertainment was very good, hosts very good and a wide range to suit everyone. We enjoyed the hoilday in Newquay, had a good time. We would not a stay at the Marina Hotel again or recommend it to anyone in the condition it is in at this time. We would have expected more from a Shearings (Bay Hotel) than we got.

Thank you for your recent comments I am pleased that you found the staff so helpful. With regards the painting of the Hotel we are in the process of investing money into making improvements within the hotel. We have also put new carpets and curtains in the rooms as well as new furniture as part of our plans to make improvements.

Hopefully if you should return you will be able to see the improvements we have made.

Thanks again for your comments.

We've just returned from a four-night stay at the Marina Hotel with National Holidays. All in all, we had an absolutely fantastic time -- this was our first coach trip, and while we were a little bit younger than most (in our late twenties, early thirties ...) everyone was really friendly and made us feel extremely welcome. The hotel is in a great location, straight across from one of Newquay's lovely beaches, and we also had a sea view.

The hotel itself is not the Ritz, but if you expect the rooms to meet that kind of standard at the price (£250 each, sea view, breakfast, dinner, four free drinks each, trips to Falmouth, Truro, St Ives and much more) then your expectations are not realistic. The rooms could certainly use a little bit of renovation, but they weren't anywhere near as bad as has been described by some on here (the lounge was being renovated while we were there and now looks great). Staff were brilliant, very friendly and approachable, and both Mike and Bob did a superb job of ferrying us all about to various places. We're amazed that they are able to offer all of this at the price, and would definitely recommend to others/consider returning in the future -- beds were nice and comfy too!

Thank you very much for your wonderful and positive remarks I am really pleased you enjoyed yourselves whilst here with us at the Marina Hotel. I agree with your statement I do feel that we offer fantastic value for money in terms of what guests receive in service, accommodation, food and excursions as indeed do many of our other hotels throughout the country.

I also love the sea view its something you just dont get tired of seeing no matter how long you see it, its even better in the Sun!

I hope that we will see you here again at some time in the near future.

Thank you for your comments, with regards the issues in your room we have just completed works to the front of the building including the flat roof areas so this should rectify the issue with damp that you commented on.

I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and I will pass on your comments to Tracy its always refreshing to have the staff acknowledged for the huge part they play in the hotel and for all their hard work.

Hopefully we will see you again at some point in the future either here or at one of our many other hotels all of which are situated in beautiful locations tghroughout the country

Myself and my husband stayed at the Marina from the 12th to the 18th of August. We travelled with National holidays. Pick-up and journey down very smooth. On arrival we were greeted by the head receptionist who told us about check-in,meal times etc. We stayed in room no 33 which was situated at the back of the hotel. The actual room was fine, nice comfortable bed, nice furniture, lovely white cotton sheets. The bathroom was a bit of a let down obviously needs a major refurb, but on the plus side nice clean towels and plenty of hot water, and we didn't come to cornwall to spend all of our time in the bathroom.

The dining room experience was excellent. Your table throughout your stay is allocated when you have your first meal. We were on table 15. Unfortunatley i can't remember the name of the lady that served us throughout out stay but she was excellent. We never had to wait for anything. The food was lovely, plenty of choice and always piping hot. Also the wine with the meal was very nice.

The entertainment is what you make it. We enjoyed the bingo and quizes that were held every night. Our favourite entertainer was the comedian. Pink charity night very good as well.( Don't know about my karaoke.) I also prefer the system of the 4 drinks vouchers. It was nice to be able to have a drink at anytime rather than wait for the race at 7.30 to see who could be first to the bar.

The trips out were excellent. We went to so many beautiful places. The driver Steve was very informative. It is the most beautiful county.

The only thing that spoilt the trip was that the fire alarm went off on 3 nights out of the 6. In all i think it went off about 7 times throughout our stay, all early morning. We were told this was because people didn't open their windows when they had a shower. Although on 1 occasion we were told the sensor was set off in a staff room that had been empty for 3 months. I felt really sorry for the staff that were their as they took the brunt of peoples frustrations at being woken up so many times. This problem really needs to be addressed because as the week went on people didn't bother getting out of bed because it happened so many times. In the future this could have serious repercussions because one day their may be a real fire. Also i felt the staff didn't know what to do when the alarms kept going off. We never saw the general manager all week. He may have been there but never made an appearance. It would have been better perhaps if maybe he had come into the restaurant and explained the situation to people about the alarms instead of making us all wonder what was happening and that he was actually doing something about it.

All in all apart from that we had a very enjoyable stay and will return in the future. Thanks to all the lovely staff.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have showers. We had just a bath. Not very nice outlook at the back. No lift. Also som...

Thank you for your remarks on your stay at the Hotel I totally agree with you that Cornwall is a lovely area with so much to see and do so I am pleased you had the opportunity to explore this stunning party of the country.

I can only apologise with regards the fire alarm, however we have changed the system around to rectify this issue and to date we have had no other false alarms.

Pink Night that you enjoyed is something that we take great pride in, we try both as a large Company and indeed as a local empolyer to try and give something back to the community and this is a way that we can benefit both the local area and also a narional charity and I think that the staff do a wonderful job in promoting this.

Thanks again for your lovely comments.

Similar to the guys review on may 27th 2012 we had room 11 and if like you say it has been improved I dread to think what it was like before. After travelling 10 hours it smelled of mould and had wallpaper hanging off the walls. The bathroom was disgusting and full of mould. I would recommend to anyone to not stay here. Clearly this is an ongoing problem with room 11 that needs to be dealt with urgently. When you are staying away from home the least you expect is a clean room without a strong smell and full of mould.

I am sorry that this room had the issue you described, there was an issue with penetrating damp, however this has been rectified and the room redecorated and painted.

I would be happy to show you the room if you were to return so that you could see the changes implemented.
