“Exactly what it says on the tin”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

I stayed at this hotel after myself and 5 others decided to book a last minute trip to Newquay for New Years eve. I was slightly worried by the prevouis reviews so went with an open mind.

I was very pleased to say that it was cleaning and the reception and bar area has been done up with a modern come seaside touch and it was lovely all sitting in the bar with the log burner on before we went out. The views from this hotel are amazing and although like some of the prevouis reviews state some of the furniture in the bedrooms is slightly tried I could not fault the cleanliness of our room and bedding.

I would also like to thank the owner of the Surfside hotel as she was very welcoming. She also bought us extra cups to our room, arranged for an extra bed to be put in the room and called for a taxi for us both in the day and eveining. We also went to the bar in the evening and met a few of the locals who must also like it there and both owners were very polite and we all had a good time.

Thank you Surfside we will see you at Easter

The hotel is in an amazing location on Fistral Beach, which is why it is such a shame the hotel was VERY SUBSTANDARD. The rooms were extremely tired looking, which we don't mind but the shower was like being sneezed on, very underpowered, and the handles were broken on it, making it very painful to turn the shower on and off, especially when wet. The door to the shower was so close to the wall that my boyfirnd trapped his fingers painfully between the wall and shower door. There was no soap supplied meaning you could not wash your hands after using the toilet without unpacking your own shower gel. The room smelt very musky but one of the windows was jammed shut so we couldn't air the room. The fan in the 'ensuite' toilet did not work. The 'continental breakfast' was nothing more than a joke, served begrudgingly by a very very surly woman who I assumed was the owner. There was a small selection of empty cereal boxes and the milk had not been refilled. I was snapped at when I asked for some toast. All in all I was very disappointed with this hotel, felt like a pain to the owners for being there and will not be returning. For the price I paid for the room I would expect much more, yes the view was amazing but i could have found hotels with equally amazing views who would have been glad to have us. Myself and my boyfriend have stayed in many hotels in many countries including cheap hostels and this was without a doubt the worse hotel I have stayed not to mention the most unwelcoming.

Room Tip: Don't book here.

Trip to newquay with partner - i was expecting alot more than what i got for the 'reduced price' in september. This is not a hotel but a cheap surf lodge that is trying to be a hotel. It is over priced purely due to the location. The carpet in the room was disgusting, we could feel every spring in the mattress, the ensuite you could barely turn around in, the tiny cupboard in the bathroom fell off the wall, we opened the curtain and had the view of the hotel next door 3 metres away with a dead space in between. The curtains barely covered the windows. If we are paying so much for such a small room with appalling ensuite, why hasn't there been a lick of paint or a new carpet since the 70's???? Dirty woodchip wallpaper..... REALLY? I have stayed in better surf lodges in newquay for £12-15 four to eight yrs ago and one for 20 pound last year. Having paid £140 for 2 nights purely because we were shattered and not thinking straight we woke up, ate breakfast, asked for a refund (i regret only for the night we didn't stay) and then stayed in an actually hotel with sea views, amazing bar/brasserie, pool, sauna, gym, jacuzzi, an ensuite you could swing a cat in which was friendly, updated, spacious and only £10 dearer than the surfside and then we finally relaxed and enjoyed our trip to newquay. I would never recommend this 'hotel' to anyone but will absolutely be staying at the other gem i discovered which i just checked an is unbelievably slightly cheaper at present for a double room!!!!

Room Tip: Pick a different hotel

Visited this hotel during half term when you would expect all facilities to be available. Not so. The bar and thus the games room were locked ALL day despite inclement weather. Took 20 mins for the owners to answer the bell to be told the bar would not be open ‘til the evening. ‘large family bedroom’ was infact 5 beds in the attic with all the bed pushed into the eaves, no headboards & no room to move between. Impossible to sit up in beds. No chairs, one bedside table. Smelly, old, bathroom with ineffective shower. Wi Fi too weak at top of house. Beds v uncomfortable. Told by the owner that I was lucky to be getting such good value for the price we paid (£220 for 2 nights, a reduction of over £100 – hard to believe anybody pays that). We left after one uncomfortable night. The only good point was the view from our tiny attic window & the fabulous restaurant across the road overlooking the beach (nothing to do with the hotel) This is not a hotel, it is a low grade b&b.

Room Tip: Ask for the one in the picture on their website - ours looked nothing like this

We had a great stay at The Surfside Hotel. The staff were friendly, forgiving, (family of 5!), & accommodating. Everything was there that was needed for a comfortable stay, even a games area for the kids, & a bar for the grown ups!. Fantastic position and views from the hotel are stunning, with it being literally across the road from Fistral beach.
Some reviewers mention that its a little tired etc. but at the end of the day, everything was there, from TV, drinks facilities, en-suite etc in the room, and more importantly, everything was clean, and the service was good. If you want the fancy decor, I'm sure there's plenty of hotels up the road that will tick that box, but you will not be paying these prices. So for a family on a budget, that doesn't expect the 'Ritz' then I do recommend this hotel!

I booked a two night stay here last minute, I must say it is an average place to stay very welcoming with a good breakfast unfortunately the rooms are poor to average room 4 smells a bit musty/damp, has ample sleep room but some beds are in poor condition and the shower is less than accommodating very small. Parking is available but sometimes difficult. I think with a half decent refit this hotel would thrive but at the moment it's JUST Enough!

Just got back from a brill week staying here. Staff were really helpful and friendly and couldn't have done more. The view from the hotel is amazing and couldn't be better. The rooms were of a reasonable size and perfect for being the base of your stay. The food was good and came in generous portions. A really good value for money week away and wouldn't hesitate re-booking for next year. Thankyou Surfside.
