“Great value accommodation overlooking the beach”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

Friendly, welcoming, helpful staff and a great location overlooking Towan Beach made this a great choice for budget accommodation in Newquay for the weekend.

The reasonable cost covers your room and if you want any extras like towels, tea/coffee, toiletries etc, they're available at a nominal cost from reception; I'd read some reviews here bemoaning this policy, which I don't quite get: the hotel don't hide this policy but actually make it a feature - you pay less for your room and are then free to add (or not) whatever you want. Personally, it suited us just fine - we added towels for £1 each and would have taken our own toiletries anyway; we decided not to have breakfast in the hotel, but again if we'd wanted to, the price and details were completely transparent. Hair-dryers & irons etc were available free of charge on request.

The sea-view room we had was more spacious than the bunk/twins and yes, the view (unsurprisingly!) was much nicer, too :)

Overall, we thought our stay was really good value in a clean and comfortable hotel, with friendly, helpful staff. We'd recommend it and will no doubt stay there again next time we're in Newquay.

PS We were on the 2nd floor and the fire-doors all closed nice and quietly on automatic shutters.

I visited Hotel Sunnyside in Newquay in September 2013 as part of a hen party. The hotel is basic, so don't go expecting too much, but is it exceptionally clean and perfectly comfortable for a short stay. We had a combination of bunk bed rooms and normal rooms. I would perhaps recommend the bunk bed rooms, but purely on the price- £10 cheaper. It doesn't matter much on a weekend break with friends! The hotel have a concept with respect of extras- you need to pay for towels and breakfast. This was made very clear in a series of emails (perhaps too many?) from the hotel- I guess they don't want anyone to be surprised about this part. We booked breakfast at £5 each, but bought our own towels. Breakfast was delicious for the money. The staff at the hotel are very friendly- nothing too much trouble. Weather was great when we were there, so we headed out to the beach for the day. Nightlife in Newquay was busy with a fun vibe. Perfect for hens and stags. Overall a great place for a group stay. Not sure why any families and older people would book here. Very much geared to younger guests. Thank-you. We'll be back. The May Hen party xxx

Not bad for the price, simple, fairly clean, but terrible view unless you're facing the beach. Everything costs extra, towels, wi-fi, breakfast etc, so be prepared for that. The beds aren't very sturdy and slamming fire doors is a constant annoyance. Good location though and very cheap.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the beach. Bring towels, and a travel kettle if you have one.

I organised a new school trip from near London to Newquay to take part in several activities in the local area. The staff at Hotel Sunnyside made running the trip much easier and were very professional.

When our coach was running late on the way there the manager of the hotel stayed late into the night to make sure that we settled in ok with no complaints. The food cost for the students was good and provided them with an all-round meal each day. They avoided booking hen/stag dos for the duration of our stay and carefully positioned students rooms to be in the same corridors to avoid other guests.

As this was the first time running the trip our timings were out for most activites. The staff carried on showing professionalism throughout, being incredible flexible if we were turning up late or needed any help with anything. The manager even put on a sweet hunt for the students to keep them occupied one evening.

The hotel has really ticked all the boxes for a school trip: good staff (proffesional, helpful and with a good sense of humour), inexpensive and well situated. I will very likely be using the same hotel next year when I run the trip again.

Stayed here with a group last month and we just wanted to say thank-you for a fantastic trip. All the staff are so friendly, the location is second to none and the rooms are basic but comfy and clean, exactly what we needed. I've stayed in a lot of places in Newquay and you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere better for the money! See you guys in 2014! :-)

Room Tip: The bunk rooms are fantastic value for money

The room was ok, the location was perfect, and the late check in service was immensely helpful, despite having no knowledge of my booking, the night manager phil, carried my bags to the room and found me a parking spot down the road. Although the room was small and the location awkward to get to, and the normal things were extras here, like towels and breakfasts, overall it was a nice friendly place, right by the beach.

Thank-you Runningbot for the feedback. We are grateful.

Your comments concerning Phil, in particular, are much appreciated. The issue regarding your check-in is something we have noted with a view to improving. We will undertake further training to ensure ALL check-ins run smoothly- whether it be at 3pm or 3am. Friendly customer service and an efficient check-in is something we pride ourselves on.

The Sunnyside hotel is in a good location in Newquay with very good sea views. Without this major draw, I would probably give the hotel a 2 star.

You can tell that the staff try their hardest to accommodate your needs, however the major problem with the hotel is this 'concept', whereby you need to pay for everything you need - towels are £1, tea coffee making facilities £3, parking, £3 etc.The hotel claims this is to drive their prices down and be competitive, but what is the difference, perhaps a tenner if that? The hotel is ok if you are not out to impress your partner. We went as a young couple. The hotel is catered mainly for stag and hen parties, but it doesn't single couples or families out. The problem this is, is you are tarnished with the same brush, in the respect that you still need to pay a security deposit, and present your hotel pass every time you enter the Hotel. This didn't feel very welcoming for myself or my partner. There was an air of "we want to provide you with the bare minimum, and don't go trashing the place". We are a mature, very sensible intelligent couple for our age, who drink to our limits and we feel that this wasn't a nice factor about the hotel. There is being security conscious and there's being over cautious.

I will write a fair review here. The receptionist, Sally was friendly and very helpful. The bloke in the breakfast area, however was somewhat miserable. The breakfast was a decent size, tasty, despite the sausages being reheated and the toast cold, it wasn't bad overall.

I still believe that the pricing concept is what lets the hotel down. You enter your room and there are no tea or coffee making facilities or towels, making you feel slightly short changed. One electric socket was broken in the room. There were only 2 plug sockets available, right at an awkward area by the door. The double room was two single beds put together, and there was a minor blood mark on the bathroom door. The grout in the shower was dirty. There was also a smell of BO as you climbed the stairs. The fire alarm also went off twice whilst asleep without an apology.

Fair enough if this hotel wants to be competitive, but the whole 'concept' of a hotel is to provide a good customer service to your guests. I feel that you should still be provided with a good level of service to make up for these pitfalls. If the hotel improves its cleanliness and throws in just one towel for free, along with a small kettle and a handful of teas, the £59 will be very good value for money. It just needs some minor tweaks and the scrapping of the pricing concept. Just because Sunnyside is a budget hotel, doesn't mean you throw away all the basics.

I hope I have been fair here in detailing the good points and bad points about the place.

Overall, not a bad hotel if you want somewhere to crash if you're simply out to drink with your mates, or don't care about where you stay. However, think carefully if you are a couple.

If you aren't bothered about the appearance and want to bring your own brew kit, toiletries and towel, this place is for you.

Hi Neil.

Thank-you for taking the time to review our hotel. We're pleased to read that you enjoyed most aspects of your stay with us. Thank-you especially for highlighting Sally on reception. We are obviously disappointed, however, that you found our hotel concept less agreeable.

Being such an important part of how we operate, we do try to market our 'pay for what you need' concept in the clearest possible way. The information is highlighted throughout our website and within our booking emails.

The concept was actually introduced following guest feedback. Since its introduction, the concept has proved very popular on the whole, especially with groups. As noted, it is indeed a way for the hotel to control costs and maintain our low rates. Hotel Sunnyside is consistently one of the most affordable hotel options for groups in Newquay.

We hope to welcome you back to Hotel Sunnyside again in the future.
