“Worth another visit”
Reviewed February 19, 2011

We booked this accomodation as it was local to the University at which we were attending an open day. On arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our room which was exceptionally clean and well maintained. The beds were comfortable and the room nicely decorated. We opted for a room which had a double and a single room attached for our teenage daughter, perfectly adequate and well priced. Breakfast was of a good standard with an option of pancakes and blueberries which was very much enjoyed by pernickity daughter !!
My criteria for a good B&B would be; nice bed, good towels and a decent cup of tea tea....fulfilled all three nicely, with the added bonus of a few touches that went the extra mile. Well done.

We arrived to find the hotel covered in scaffolding. The owner was very friendly and full of information but when we were left in the room we found it too cold to sit and relax in. We didn't immediately complain as we thought they had maybe only just turned on the heating but it was off when we got back later and just as cold in the morning. The bathroom was very outdated - the only heating was a wall hung fan heater - no heated towel rail or even a normal radiator; probably last updated in the 1960s, with a weak electric shower in the undersized plastic shower surround; grubby plastic shower gel holder - I could go on. The bedroom carpet was dirty as I found out when I tried to do some exercises in the morning. To call it a "superior" room is a joke (though the bed was certainly super-kingsize - no complaints there). Even though the room was on the side of the house the noise of the traffic on the main road was loud enough to wake us up in the morning. They did have home made jam for breakfast and the food was ok but the tea was served as a pot of hot water to which I had to add my own tea bag!
When we told the owner we were leaving after the first of three nights because we were not happy, his first reaction was not to ask what was wrong but insist that we would have to pay in full "as the contract". He did subsequently give us a 20% discount on the cost of the full three nights (ie we paid for two and a half nights while only getting one unsatisfactory one) and he asked what was wrong - at that point he agreed the shower room needed updating - if they know that they should either not let the room or make it very cheap - I would expect a better standard of accommodation at £85 per night.
