We have been coming to eat at Cribbs since they opened in 2007. Back then it was just the chef, John, in the kitchen and one waitress. Now John has built it into a flourishing business which has recently opened new premises in the Market Square. Despite the expansion he has never lost sight of what he is trying to achieve - excellent food at reasonable prices. This is a chef who truly understands spices and flavours. He creates a wonderful Caribbean atmosphere with his food and uses the finest local ingredients. We go down to Falmouth for one week a year, and eat out each night. Cribbs is the place we always go to twice. The food, the friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere make it a real gastronomic treat. The Caribbean style lamb shank is the best lamb shank I've ever had, not that we had one this year - John if you are reading this you will know who we are! Can't wait to come and eat in your restaurant next October.

We've dined at Cribbs before and had a really enjoyable dinner and if anything it appears to have got better.

If I was being ultra picky I would say I would have appreciated another couple of scallops in the starter and they were fractionally underdone to my taste (though I do like them close to rare!) but the Cod Run Down was absolutely sensational. The cod and the mussels were cooked to perfection and the sauce was to die for.

My wife had the reggae reggae duck with crushed sweet potatoes and that was spot on too.

Service was great, the Banks bottled beer was an excellent accompaniment to the food, we'll definitely be going back.

We had seen Cribbs when we were in Cornwall in the summer and had looked forward to visiting it on our return trip.

We were welcomed on entering and choose a table near the window. We wanted something local and Cornish to drink and the waitress allowed us to try the bottled ales they had been given to try from the local Keltik brewery in Redruth.

We ordered the calamari and bucket starter. Both of which were a range of breaded and fried fresh seafood and chicken. The fish was beautiful and the calamari in particular was very well cooked. The breaded fish goujon was perfectly spiced and cooked, but the chicken was a little overdone, with far too much 'crunch' in the coating. This course could have been average, and we felt for the price tag the portion size was a little small. Just one prawn, just one chicken goujon, just one fish goujon...you get the picture. The calimari was perfectly cooked but the dressing on the side salad had spread all over the plate which meant the batter on the calamari was soggy and cold. However, the spices in the coating and dipping sauce were all amazing, fresh, spicy, warm and full of flavour.

For main course we had ordered the fish janga and the tuna steak with rice and peas. Again, this dishes showcased the chefs amazing skill balancing flavours, but again we were disappointed with the cook quality. The tuna was overcooked, chewy, not pleasant and the Janga whilst perfect when it arrived, after a couple of minutes the very high temperature of the sauce meant that the fish was overcooked before you could eat it. The sauce/broth of the Janga was spectacular, rich, buttery, spicy, warming. We could have eaten it like a soup, but I must note that for the price of the dish it was a shame it didn't come with any accompanying carbs. It would have been lovely with a warm slice of cornbread.

I cannot fault the service of the waitress, chatty and friendly but not overbearing, and when we commented on the quality of our main courses she offered us a complimentary drink. The chef came over to the table and we explained our problems with the meal. Chef listened but did not apologise, just explained that he always cooked the tuna this way but would take on board our comments, he was very pleasant. At this point I would have expected a refund for at least one of the main dishes but it was not offered and the complimentary drinks did not equal what we had spent on 4 dishes that were not quite right, and it is probably for this reason that we didn't remain for pudding or to try out some of the restaurant's legendary cocktails.

The ideas and tastes in this restaurant demonstrate an excellent knowledge and creativity from the Chef, he knows what he is doing and how to construct Caribbean dishes. But the execution was lacking, with each of the four dishes ordered needing some development in either cook quality, final content or presentation. We would preferred to have seen simpler dishes with less aspiration, cooked in a consistent was that was worthy of the price tag.

Should this put you off dining at Cribbs, absolutely not. I don't think you will find a better combination of caribbean flavours or smells anywhere in Cornwall.

Fantastic food. Knockout cocktails. Great atmosphere. John the chef/owner is a grand master in the kitchen.

Had 2 brilliant dishes here with my girlfriend. She had the duck and I had the coconut and pineapple Janga, I do not like either Pineapple or Coconut, but ordered it as it was heavily seafood orientated. I found that it was AMAZING!! Very impressed! The duck was also delicious and the service here was above satisfactory. The atmosphere was very pleasant.

This restaurant would have to be a special occasion restaurant for us, as it is quite pricy. However, worth the money for a special occasion!

Jamaica really does meet Cornwall.
