“Disappointing Christmas meal”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

We attended the Merchant Manor Hotel as guests of a company for a Christmas meal on the Saturday evening before Christmas. When we arrived, we went to the bar to get a drink- this took about 10 -15 minutes to get served. There were at the most 3 bartenders and there was only 1 person in front waiting to be served. This was very frustrating and we had never known this to happen when the hotel was run as "the Green Lawns." At 7.30pm, we were all ushered in to the dining room to eat. Some of the girls immediately noticed how cold the room was as being a Christmas event, some had sleeveless outfits on. It appeared that the radiators were only warming up after we had been sitting down for about 20 minutes. We were also squashed like sardines at the table. There were about a dozen of us . Surely the restaurant would have warmed the room up first then turn the heating down? The starters arrived quite promptly-- very disappointing, as one of the diners on our table remarked how "minimalist" it was. This was the salmon and beetroot dish. Then, it was 9.00pm when the main course arrived. This was an unacceptable delay as we have never been to a meal where diners had to wait an hour and a half for the main course. The timing of the meals should not have posed a problem for the hotel as they were given guests' choices well in advance (that is, about a week in advance). The roast potatoes were rock hard, we couldn't poke our forks into them. We think that they were probably frozen and not heated through properly. The next lot of potatoes were much better. There were a couple of diners still eating their main dish when the waitress started removing everybody's plates away. This was an absolute "faux pas" in terms of customer service! This waitress was obviously not trained to wait until everybody had finished. Very embarrassing as the diners had to quickly eat up. The desserts were ok but not memorable. The coffee was served in expresso type cups. In all, it gave you the impression that the management were "cutting corners." I would not recommend this venue for a meal- the service was untrained, food poor, delays unacceptable. It is a shame as we have been to several dinner and dinner dances before the Green Lawns was taken over by the Merchant Manor with no complaints. To date, not impressed with the service and restaurant.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Merchants Manor on New Years Eve, the hotel is warm and cosy, with gorgeous big lounges. We had a friendly welcome from the receptionist who was very informative. The room was basic but cosy and everything you would need, with a roomy bath and a super, super comfy bed! The pool and Jacuzzi were also a lovely added touch to our visit that made it that little bit more enjoyable! The hotel is in a short walking distance to the town which was great for New Years Eve, and even in the early hours of the morning on New Years the taxi back was really cheap so a very good location especially if you're looking for a bit of nightlife! The breakfast was just incredible!!! I love fish so was spoilt for choice between smoked haddock, smoked salmon or kippers... In the end I asked if I could combine the eggs benedict with the smoked salmon and this was no trouble! Just gutted that I didn't get to sample the big homely looking table of continental goodies that sits in the middle of the restaurant. Great value for money, would definitely stay again!

We stayed a Merchants Manor in October 2013. The room booking was incorrect but we settled for the room we had as it was more than adequate and we had a refund and apology from the owner. The hotel has undergone some refurbishment and the rooms that are complete are very nice with high ceilings which gives them an imposing atmosphere. The owner told u they were planning further refurbishments that should set it up as a boutique hotel. It certainly has the potential for this and if the current refurb is continued it will be very nice when complete. We will return as overall was a good hotel and we want to see further developments.

Went to the restaurant of hotel with close friends for Christmas lunch. The rooms we saw had been beautifully redecorated (from the Green Lawns days). Bar area was warm and inviting, as was the restaurant. The service was a little amateurish in places and very slightly rushed. The food was excellent, though, with several lovely little touches. Two of our party had the beef and two the turkey. We were all delighted. The wine we chose was very well presented, very nice and (I think) good value. We have been to other venues for Christmas lunch and this was our first visit to Merchant Manor.
I am pleased we chose it. For me it did more than "it said on the tin".

Unfriendly welcome by receptionist - though she was much cheerier when we spoke to her again later. Cold, dark corridors. Room was adequate though table lamp had seen better days. Standard of cleaning not great - hairs in shower, hospitality tray was dirty and the skirtings had not seen a duster in a long time! Breakfast was ok, though the waitress could do with some training in manners - leaning across my husband and asking 'do you want coffee?' was not the greatest start to my day.

This is my first stay here since it changed from Greenlawns - I'm afraid that whilst new bedding and towels may have been purchased, there is a long way to go yet.

Had lovely stay at merchants manor. Welcoming helpful staff. Warm and comfy room. A great fire in the lounge and so pleased that the hotel had a super restaurant which saved us from taking pot luck in town. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Plenty of choice for the less mobile on the ground floor just ask

Despite all good reviews we have read below, our experience at Merchant's Manor was almost a complete disaster! It was not a total disaster because the restaurant - food, beverage and service - was quite nice. I'll just stress out our problems, hoping Ms. Sioned Parry-Rudlin, who welcomed us on September 30, 2013 with such a nice letter, will take this constructive comments into consideration: 1) Bad internal signaling - since we had no one to help us with our luggage, we got lost and couldn't find our room (Room 41) easily; 2) Too many stairs and too many supposedly internal "fire doors" - you are lost every single time you leave the room; 3) Bad lighting inside the room - I found it a bit dark and reading lights were not quite proper; 4) Hot water in the bathroom was a dramatic issue - it would come in very slowly and weak; 5) You almost need a special course to turn the shower on; 5) Not enough water to flush the toilet - you had to repeat flushing a few times to get it completely clean; 6) Housekeeping simply skipped our room and when we arrived at early evening, the room had simply not be served; 7) Front desk personnel seemed not well trained - looking like they have started working at Merchant's Manor on the very previous day and were left alone without not really knowing the hotel and their jobs; 8) Wake-up call was ignored by Front Desk on the morning of October 2, 2013. We missed breakfast and almost missed our Rabbie's Tour group. As an apology, the lady at Front Desk put the fault on the computer. She should at least have not charged the breakfasts we missed due to computer malfunctioning. No such compensation, she charged us the full rate: £ 131.00 and that's it! And finally, two last remarks: 1) Merchant's Manor is not at a walking distance from Falmouth touristic port area. Take a taxi or choose another hotel; 2) Two many weddings happening at Merchant's Manor - as seen in the previous reviews. If you are not a guest to any of the on-going weddings, your stay maybe a complete nightmare! Check this before booking!
