“A nice peaceful break”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We arrived just after 2pm and our room was already for us it was clean and tidy but could do with a lick of paint . The location was perfect its a nice peaceful hotel and would defiantly visit again . We ate in the restaurant on the first night and it was very good service the food was excellent . Then we are the second evening in the bar and that was also a really good meal . We will be back again and would recommend this hotel highly . The staff were ALL accommodating and very friendly . Thank you for a nice break

We have stayed here for 5 nights in this beautiful Victorian Building.
The staff was great and managed to create a relaxed friendly service oriented atmosphere.
It felt like home with a nice big lounge with comfortable couches.
The room was big and the bed was super.
Certainly a place to visit again.
They also have a swimming pool and a fitness room.

I can recommend this hotel to everyone!!

The trouble is that this gets compared with the Budock Vein, not so far away... but they really are to two distinct categories.
The room is corporate average, the food mediocre, and the service was poor... the morning paper not available ( 'oh, somebody must have taken it, I know you ordered one.' ). The pool is quite small, with a minute weight area.
Guess it will be the Budock Vein in future.

We stayed just one night recently but crammed lots into our visit. We arrived following a drive from Plymouth and refreshed ourselves in the outdoor heated swimming pool. The pool is set in a beautiful walled garden and we were the only ones swimming. Our room was stunning (no 26 I think). In the morning I had another dip in the pool and did my yoga practice in the garden which was very tranquil. Breakfast was very good and the service and all the team were very friendly. It is our second stay at the Penmere and we will be back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view room and an upgrade if you can afford it. We were on the first floor. Ground f...

Its with a sense of regret that I feel the need to write a negative review of this hotel As a local resident we have been coming to this hotel for more than 15 years for various things such as weddings (including our own) , dinners out, leisure club membership and summer days beside the outdoor pool.

We have seen this hotel change hands three times during this period and sadly its become steadily worse over the years. Whereas once it used to have thriving local support, many weddings catered for, a play area for the children, a games room, a snooker room, outdoor chess on the patio, croquet on the lawn - all this has now gone and been replaced by cheap coach tours for the elderly. The public areas are in need of a facelift and the gymnasium contains ageing and indeed rusting equipment.

To cap it all off today was a gorgeous sunny Saturday and we made our way to the outdoor pool with the intention of a leisurely day with a swim and some lunch. However it transpires that this is the only hotel we have ever been to (and we've been to quite a few around the world) that doesn't serve lunch or any food during a weekend! This is despite the menu clearly stating food from 12 noon until 2pm, "Yes its confusing" said the sole member of staff on duty 'But we don't serve food at a weekend" Well to say we were surprised was an understatement, I find it absolutely incredible that this is the case and her absolute indifference to it really just highlighted the decline of the place. Needless to say we just packed up and went home. What paying overnight guests must think is beyond me and I truly wish some hotelier with some loving care and money would rescue the place before it fails completely and gets sold for housing development!

Our room was comfortable and well equipped with traditional hotel furniture. We had tow good meals in the bar which seemed to offer much better value than the restaurant, I particularly enjoyed a lovely juicy steak. The breakfast was also fine.

The pool was very pleasant and not too busy and we enjoyed wallowing in the hot tub, however unfortunately the sauna wasn't working when we were there.

The hotel is in a quiet residential area but you can walk into the town.

I'd recommend it as value for money

We stayed here for 3 nights over a (wet) bank holiday weekend. The main reason for choosing the hotel was the indoor pool and that we would be able to walk into Falmouth town centre which is about a mile away.
The pool, jacuzzi and sauna area are great. Yes, the paintwork is a bit shabby in areas, but it is generally very clean and the water temperatures are perfect. Well done to the management. I've used indoor pools in similar hotels elsewhere and they have so much chlorine in the water that your eyes sting when you swim - not so here!
Our room (a garden room, number 12) was very spacious and was great for us with our dog. Again, it was very clean and well kept (the hotel cannot be faulted when it comes to housekeeping). The decor is plain which is a shame as (with better decor) this hotel could be exceptional.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel, and it was (generally) very good. The "full English" was as good as I've had elsewhere and I usually measure breakfast by the quality of sausage which, in this case, was better than average. No "Richmond" frozen sausages here.
Unfortunately, my partner had smoked haddock one morning and this was very overcooked which was a shame as it was a good piece of fish. On other mornings she ordered scrambled eggs which were very good and the portion was huge. The downside of breakfast was the bread used for toast which was very basic cheap bread. I'm sure a better quality bread would not cost much more but would compliment the breakfast better.
All the staff were polite and friendly.
Would I stay here again? Yes, especially in the summer months when the outdoor pool area would be very inviting.
Tip: if eating in town, visit the Chain Locker pub - excellent food and very reasonable.
