Trerose Manor

Our hostess, Tessa Phipps, made this B&B extraordinary. This property, a short drive outside the village of Mawnan Smith, has been lived on since the Bronze Age, and parts of the house may date from the 13th Century. The dining room/kitchen is warm and welcoming, with a magnificent oil-fired stove that has to burn continuously and is always ready to go. We stayed in the Four Poster Room, which had an adjoining room that could accommodate children. We were the only guests for our two nights, so Tessa gave us the run of the place. Our bath did not have a shower, so she invited us to use a nearby room with a shower. There are no restaurants within walking distance, and we didn’t have a car in the evenings, so Tessa drove us in her car (only a few minutes away) and picked us up at an appointed time − incredible service. Tessa even anticipated that we might not have a reservation for dinner and made one for us to be sure we had a good meal. Breakfasts were cozy and full of good conversation. (Tessa is a lapsed lawyer and had lots of good stories to tell.) Mawnan Smith is not much, but it does have some decent restaurants. The house also has a large, lovely garden that was still in full flower in early October. It was Tessa, however, who made our stay at Trerose Manor.

We stayed here for five days on our honeymoon and it was a perfect stay, which we just didn't want to end. It is difficult to think of things to say which haven't already been said by other reviewers, but our room (the French Room) had triple aspect windows, a very comfortable bed, great bathroom, plenty of space and a wonderful chaise longue in the window overlooking the beautiful gardens. The house itself is exactly what you would expect of an old English manor house, set at the end of a very peaceful lane with sea views opening up when you walked to the other side of the lane. The welcome with freshly baked scones, jam and cream was more than you could possibly expect and the hosts, Tessa, Piers and Diesel the dog were tremendous fun and incredibly helpful. The house is about 40 minutes walk along the coast path from a pub, the Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage which we really liked. The fish and seafood was so good that we made three visits in the evening, and one lunchtime visit. Above all, this was the sort of stay where you felt completely at home and at ease - something you often cannot say about staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast. We would recommend Trerose Manor without the slightest hesitation and really hope we may be able to visit again at some point in the future.

Room Tip: The French Room was lovely, but I imagine that the other rooms were equally as nice in their own way...

Arriving at Trerose Manor, entering through the garden area and then into the house, was like walking into a Hollywood movie that tries to recreate the perfect English country home. Perfection! Our hosts are expert gardeners (When asked, Piers gave me a tour of their expansive and beautifully landscaped flower garden) , supplied us with history of the region, and their house--the property dates back to Oliver Cromwell--and earlier. Our room (the Badger) was large, filled with light and oh so comfortable. My husband and I stayed for three nights and Trerose Manor was our favorite B&B in our month long stay in the UK.
P.S.Tessa gave us very detailed driving instructions--please follow them closely as its unique location is off the beaten path.

This is the second time we have stayed with Tessa and Piers and this time we brought our young daughter. We enjoyed this stay as much as our first visit. Tessa and Piers are gracious hosts, offer the best breakfasts in Cornwall and are able to put you at ease and make you feel comfortable immediately. The rooms are charming and comfortable and any stay at Trerose Manor will leave you feeling relaxed.

We stayed for 6 nights and found Trerose Manor and it's garden to be a wonderful place to stay. The welcome from Tessa Phipps (and Diesel), the great breakfasts, the comfortable and attractive room, a day by the fire when the rain poured down, will all be remembered. Nothing was too much trouble and the advice given on the best local restaurants and pubs was spot on. We have already booked our next stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the French Room which has a triple aspect. The morning sunshine was so enjoyable. There...

Other reviews describe Trerose Manor far more eloquently than we can, but we are so impressed that we have to say something! From the moment Mrs Phipps and Diesel found us wandering lost in the lane, we knew we were in safe hands - and paws of course. Their hospitality knew no bounds. As for Trerose Manor itself - it IS Cornwall wrapped in a beautiful cocoon of warmth, cosiness and style. Give yourselves a real treat and stay there. Dog treats optional.

I can only concur with the previous reviewers. The welcome, the room, the breakfasts, the location ....all are perfect for a few days in this lovely part of the World. The nearby Italian restaurant, while a bit old fashioned, is family run (and all the better for it) and the local pub serves good food. And the walks from the front door along the Helford are very picturesque. A good place to return too ...

Room Tip: The bay window of the French room is a good place to relax with a view over the pretty garden.
