Our hostess, Tessa Phipps, made this B&B extraordinary. This property, a short drive outside the village of Mawnan Smith, has been lived on since the Bronze Age, and parts of the house may date from the 13th Century. The dining room/kitchen is warm and welcoming, with a magnificent oil-fired stove that has to burn continuously and is always ready to go. We stayed in the Four Poster Room, which had an adjoining room that could accommodate children. We were the only guests for our two nights, so Tessa gave us the run of the place. Our bath did not have a shower, so she invited us to use a nearby room with a shower. There are no restaurants within walking distance, and we didn’t have a car in the evenings, so Tessa drove us in her car (only a few minutes away) and picked us up at an appointed time − incredible service. Tessa even anticipated that we might not have a reservation for dinner and made one for us to be sure we had a good meal. Breakfasts were cozy and full of good conversation. (Tessa is a lapsed lawyer and had lots of good stories to tell.) Mawnan Smith is not much, but it does have some decent restaurants. The house also has a large, lovely garden that was still in full flower in early October. It was Tessa, however, who made our stay at Trerose Manor.
