Great atmosphere , good food. We'll worth a visit
Ironic how somewhere called the botanist has only one live plant which looks nearly dead. It's all in the details

If you ask me, the answer to the headline is a definity YES. Great staff, always with a smile, great beer. Don't miss the Red Willow if you're into the ale types.

Met a friend after work for a catch up and something to eat. We both had the 'hanging kebab' normally served with chips, but I asked for salad instead and they quite happily changed it. When it arrived the waiter placed the chicken kebab 'hanging' on the table then drizzled butter, chilli, lime and garlic butter from the top so it drip all the way down the chicken onto the salad underneath. Genius and delicious. Bottle of prosecco reasonably priced.

A group of us decided to go for a meal during our lunch 'hour' and rang to book and forewarn them that we were on a tight turn around (in fact we pre ordered trying to avoid any delay).

1. It's a nicely decorated (themed type) restaurant, pleasant surroundings
2. The 'Starters' arrived before the drinks which took 25mins from sitting down
3 The mains arrived at 50 mins from sitting down
4. The standard of food was very good and interesting
5. Trying to find someone to get the bill was another problem. Took 15 mins from finishing our meal

It's a real shame that the service lets them down. It wasn't even that busy at lunch time. Would recommend if you have nothing to rush off to or can wait to eat. Rating score brought down by the lack of decent service.

This is easily rectified by training perhaps?

I’ve just read the review in the Chester Standard which has prompted me to (1) write this review and (2) never read their local reviews again. I can’t believe somebody who is deemed an ‘expert’ could have missed the point by so much.
I booked a table at the Botanist for a party of four. One of us being a vegetarian and another - just fussy.
I too ordered the mushrooms as a starter. They were indeed presented in a trowel but rather than shock horror, it was pretty much a wow moment close to standing ovation. To my shame, I instagram’d the dish straight away. Thankfully, unlike the Standard’s reviewer, I was lucky enough to have been born with opposable thumbs so using cutlery and eating from a bowl shaped serving implement came as no challenge. Yes it was a trowel but it hadn’t just been dug out of the back of a shed.
The cocktails were endless and we all opted for something different. They may have been a little more pricey than the neighbouring venues but you are paying not only for the quality but for the overall ambience, ethos and quirkiness of the place. This is not a drag-your-kids-along-to-harvester kind of venue, and although you are not required to dress formerly, this is very much a destination rather than a meeting point. The botanist is indeed the whole night.
We booked an early table as we had indeed planned to go on to the open air theatre afterwards but wished we’d booked later as the live music had kicked in before we left and the whole place had a vibe of class and excitement about it.
The portions were good. I had the cheese pie (complete with HP sauce - which made me feel right at home) but the kebabs were both a work of art and, judging by the sounds of those chowing down on them, a culinary genius.
The staff were friendly and attentive but not over familiar which can be off putting and they didn’t hover like wasps at a picnic. The place fills up quickly but at no time did we feel rushed. Management are viable and interact, which is something of a rarity these days and if you are lucky enough to get the balcony seats, you can peer through the botanical bits and bobs and watch the barristers at work.
*top tip - if you’ve not got room for pudding, push the boat out and have a hot chocolate. You wont be disappointed.
