“Good Value, Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

This is a comfortable hotel in a great location with free parking. The city centre shops and bars/ restaurants are just a few minutes away, it's great value for money and the staff are friendly and hardworking. Ok it's not the Ritz but if they refurbished the place then the prices would rocket. The bar is lively without being too loud, the prices for drinks are not at a premium like many hotels. I would recommend this hotel for a business stopover, a shopping break or a stag or hen weekend base.

Stayed there this wkend to go to the races
Staff very pleasant
Went with friends who have been before about 3 yrs ago & they said the hotel was looking abit tired
I can;t comment as i had not been before
There is a seating (smoking area) at the side of the canal which was lovely (sunny which helpt)
Breakfast was sufficient plenty of choice
Ate in the bar on the Friday afternoon which was good for a bar meal
Ideal for the shops & night life of chester
Yes i would go again

Have just spent 2 nights in this lovely hotel whilst attending the races as it is about a 15 min walk to the course and it is a very good standard of hotel for the price paid. It is an old building full of character so it is never going to be perfect and there are a couple of areas here and there which show it’s age especially the bathrooms but generally it is very tidy and cleaned to a very high standard so you can forgive a few dated fittings.
For a hotel so close to the centre of town the parking is secure and free and the food and drink is very fairly priced in fact incredibly cheap for a hotel at this level.
Breakfast was slightly limited in choice but plentiful (you can ask for other items eg mushrooms if you want them) and HOT which is rare these days, the fact that the plate warmer actually works as the plates are too hot to handle without a napkin so your breakfast stays hot whilst you eat it which is a winner for me, the only real negative about the breakfast was the time which is 7:30 – 10 which is fine if you are staying midweek on business but at the weekend where most people are there for leisure surely 8:00 - 11:00 would be a more acceptable time to finish serving? Just my opinion but we felt we needed to be up early to avoid the predicted rush between 9-10 which the hotel advised us on for both mornings via a note pushed under our door.

The real ale bar was very busy but efficient with a great range of drinks and food should you wish to eat there but a lot of people went on the hotels food cruise on their boat which seemed popular and busy as did the dinner dance which appears to take place most Friday/Saturday evenings, both of which seemed very good value for money.
The staff (yes all the ones we encountered) had obviously all been to charm school as they were all very helpful and pleasant and whilst checking out we were asked how our stay was and was everything ok which I believe should always be asked at checkout and we were pleased to confirm it was.

Only thing I would warn about is the lack of any aircon as our room was very hot due to the sun being on it most of the day but luckily we had read previous reviews which had mentioned this so we took a fan with us which resolved the issue but perhaps the hotel should look into supplying them in these particular rooms (rooms over the canal facing the road) as leaving the window open is not really an option due to the main road which passes close to this side of the hotel, with the windows closed you can hardly hear it.
We never got to use the spa facilities/pool as the weather was too nice so cannot comment on them but from what we saw they looked very good.

If you are visiting Chester I could not recommend a better all round hotel and it’s location right next to the canal is just an added bonus.

Room Tip: Club room was very nice, people seem to prefer a canal view.

Our first time at the mill hotel Chester , and although we did not stay overnight , it looked very nice I booked the canal cruise evening meal for sixteen people for my husbands 50 Th. birthday and it didn't disappoint , we had a fabulous meal and every one agreed ( which is quite hard to please everyone ) so well done to the chef and staff and to the ladies who helped in the booking of it ,we would definitely return ... The captain of the boat was very good too very funny , the staff on the boat were very efficient and friendly ,so well done to all ..............

Just back from 2 nights in chester. Loved the location of the hotel. Was worried about our room as it was right by the lift facing onto the main road and although there was some noise it didn't disturb us. Room was very clean although a little dated. Would suggest you take your own hair dryer! Bath was too narrow and short and the toilet was in al alcove that you had to back into and the toilet roll dispenser was located above your head....... Very strange! From the moment we checked in all the staff were super friendly. Ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was outstanding and great value. Breakfast was buffet style and was ok but not the same standard as dinner. Also had dinner on the hotels barge. The service was amazing and the food was the same quality as the evening before in the restaurant. Had a few drinks in the hotel bar, great selection of drinks and food and a great buzz. Really enjoyed the barge trip and would go back again if I visited chester.

The 8of us all enjoyed our week-end stay here. Staff make great efforts, canal cruise was fun. Breakfast had average choices, but plenty. Minor niggle - no air-con, so had to leave window open but as we were at the front of the hotel, got the taxi dropping off noises.

Our first time at the Mill, but it won't be our last.

The room, location, facilities are excellent, made even better by the wonderful service.

We felt welcome immediately we walked in, every member of staff going out of their way to wish you good morning or gave a nice day.

We could not believe how the bar buzzed every night, felt like we were having a drink in our local, which is rarely the case in hotel bars. Jimmy was outstanding, as were the other bar staff.

The location is brilliant, a lovely stroll into city centre. Our room was spacious, spotless, the bed was so comfortable. We had a champagne room on the 5th floor, the balcony was a pleasant addition.

Our only criticism was breakfast. We appreciated that the hotel was very busy, the staff in the restaurant worked very hard, but a 15 minute wait was disappointing. However the apology and a good breakfast did make up for the delay. Do not be put off by that small matter, the Mill is superb in all other respects.

One final big plus for us was the free secure parking on site - don't lose that, it confirms that a trip to Chester should always mean staying at the Mill.

Room Tip: 5th floor rooms are girgeous
