Stopped for 2 nights for races weekend... The Good... great, convenient location, friendly staff in reception, restauarant and housekeeping. The Bad...hotel badly in need of refit - shabby in places, bedrooms and corridors more like a sauna than anything else... The ugly... the downstairs bar is dark and dingy and more akin to a brothel that anything else. Middle aged couples trying very hard to "get to know" other couples...would not stop here again if you paid me to do so. WEIRD vibe...

Room Tip: take a fan! FAR too hot

This hotel is ideal for the city centre with a pleasant walk along the canal towpath - an easy 20 minute stroll. 10 minutes walking from the railway station, or use the free bus to the centre. The rooms were pleasant and clean and the breakfast was very good with a wide choice and friendly staff. Hotel has a restaurant and a bar serving snacks, plus a spa with a lovely pool. Will use again and thought it good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road and the outside terrace to avoid noise.

We have just had 2 nights in the hotel -my husband and I and my daughter and her two daughters. We couldn't fault the hotel-very clean and the staff were really child friendly. It was a comfortable hotel to visit with young children ( ours were 2 and 3). Unfortunately the first night our grandaugther dropped a glass in the lobby-there was no fuss about it, staff just quietly cleaned it up and we weren't made to feel stupid. The pool was really good for little ones and for swimmers too. Very clean and attractive. The children were allowed to use the pool from early morning to 7pm.
The breakfast was good and again the staff were lovely with the chidren. We only ate at the hotel on the first evening but the food was good although we only had early bar meals with the children. The second night we visited our family who lived near Chester so we didn't eat in the hotel although we would have done.
Parking was fine and we could park till 1 on the day of our departure. We also took the children swimming after breakfast as checkout was 11am so we had plenty of time to do that. Note: you don't need to take towels for swimming as they are provided.
All in all, it was a wonderful few days and we plan to stay at the hotel again. I think it's the first short break I've had where I said I could have stayed longer. Thank you Mill Hotel-we look forward to seeing you again.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking canal-it's more interesting.

Having had a lovely stay here 18 years ago and not having visited Chester since, we were looking forward to a nostalgic return. However, despite very good staff, the hotel itself did not appear to have changed a bit since our last visit. Although the hotel was clean, the decor was very dated, the furniture throughout looked rather tired and the heat throughout the hotel was unbearable, although the weather was not particularly hot. Air conditioning is desperately needed here along with refurbishment and updating. Had we been staying for longer than two nights, we would have moved hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a canalside room - our room was at the front of the hotel above the noisy kitchen extractor...

We stayed over the weekend of 13th/14th August and had a standard double room on the 3rd Floor, opposite the gym.The room was clean , the staff very friendly and we enjoyed the pool, sauna and steam room, which are not always an option with a 3 star hotel. The breakfast was good and we didn't have to wait long to be seated. The hotel do warn guests that between 9 .00 and 10.00 it is really busy. The hotel is only a short walk from the City Centre, so in my opinion it is ideally situated. The free car park is another bonus. Yes,the walk from the hotel to the City Cenre is not easy on the eye,but that is not the fault of the hotel.
However, what The Mill need to address is the temperature in the bedrooms - a good nights sleep is pretty difficult as there is no fresh air and despite opening the window, the temperaure is very uncomfortable. Also there is a continual noise outside(generators?) ,which makes sleeping even more of a problem .
I think the hotel is very good value for money and cannot criticise it for anything apart from the heat in the rooms and in certain corridors.
The hotel to my knowledge have not responded to the comments about the room temp. and they should,as it implies disinterest in what guests have to say.

The Mill Hotel is in a good location even if my sat navigation did had problems finding it. The location on either side of the Chester Canal is very interesting as there are a whole range of pubs and restaurants along the canal footpath and the hotel itself is also only about 10 minutes walk to the city centre and its famous clock, I'm sure locals will know even quicker routes. We paid £240.00 for a three night stay, Thurs to Sat and didn't really have time to use the facilities very much as we spent most of our time looking around the city attractions, shops and visiting relatives in nearby North Wales.

I did make use of their internet connection on my laptop via, a network cable provided in the room but the WI-FI signal that was there on the Thursday disappeared after day one and I couldn't connect my phone on both the other two days. I'm not sure where that signal went as the network named 'conference' never appeared again and this wasn't a major problem for me but if the only way you have to check your emails or whatever you are doing is via, WI-FI you might have a problem? Another little thing that gets this hotel a black mark was the fact we found a pair of ladies shoes sticking out from under the bed on arrival. Whoever made the bed before we arrived must have fallen over them but didn't bother to move them. Odd?
So if you're missing a pair of ladies fawn coloured hush puppies you left them at the Mill Hotel.
Of course because of the shoes we now had a cause to look under the bed and it was obvious they don't bother to vacuum under there as there were bits of old biscuits, peanuts and an assortment of rubbish and coins. Didn't create a great impression really! The rest of the room was fine.
The room is no smoking but it smelled like an ashtray on arrival and the reason being whoever used the room previously obviously smoked beside the window as too not set off the smoke alarm and used the roof outside as an ashtray. Not really the hotels fault but again just took the edge off our stay. As others have said the hotel is very warm and could be very uncomfortable if it the weather was good but as it wasn't during our stay we just about tolerated it.
The breakfast was pretty good but no variation on the three days we were there. Changing the beans for tinned tomatoes and making some mushrooms available from time to time wouldn't be difficult, but what was there was perfectly acceptable during a three day stay. The bar in the hotel seemed very popular and had a selection of real ales and sky TV showing football. There is a barrier entry car park that needs organising as the guests (read idiots) sometimes park their vehicles in the most ridiculous fashion, blocking the access through the car park and on one occasion totally blocking me in so I couldn't get out. It was someone who used the gym on this occasion and yes he drove a 4x4. If someone got a real grip on this hotel it could be even better than it is and whilst it's not the best 3 star hotel I've ever stayed in its certainly not the worst. I would probably recommend the hotel on its location alone. The free parking etc, adds to the plus points but as I've said it isn't perfect and I really think it wouldn't take that much to make it even better.

Room Tip: The other side of the hotel where the gym is looks to have been renovated.
