“Spotless café with warm staff, tasty food and great prices!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

I've been to this café several times now, and each time I've been treated with extraordinary friendliness, politeness, and have enjoyed some delicious and very generously-portioned meals served promtly and in a well-presented state. I'd especially recommend the breakfasts, which are wonderful value, and include a cup of tea or coffee. Several soups of the day are available, and these change frequently and are wonderfully varied and always include a slightly exotic and tasty option.
Whilst the interior decorating is a tad bare, I nevertheless like the fact that café exhibits the work of local artists on its walls, and really supportd local events and businesses. It has a great sense of community.
The café is not at all pretentious, and needs present itself as nothing more than it is: a warm, immaculate, little local café with tasty food and drinks at a sensible price. I deserves to be around for a long while!

“Slow, but nice. Worth the wait? Not sure.”
Reviewed January 18, 2013 via mobile

The welcome was lovely, not sure who served us, but they were very pleasant for the duration of our stay. We ordered breakfast at around 9:05-9:10, in plenty of time for a meeting that was due to start locally at 10. The food arrived at 9:50-9:55. The place was freezing (as was the weather) but the food arrived hot. Miserly portions for such vast prices and a nice atmosphere compared to some of the other cafes in north gate street. But the 50 minute wait for food was uncalled for. The cafe just wasn't busy. Sausage had an odd taste as well, like it had a liqueur in it. Not everyone's palate agreed with the flavour. I thought it was nice.

“Expensive cafe”
Reviewed January 16, 2013 via mobile

I had seen the glowing reviews for Marmalade and was interested to try it.  I had an hour to spare in Chester waiting for an an appointment so went in for a late breakfast.  From the door to the counter is only a couple of steps and I think there is only seating for 16.  I ordered the bacon topped English muffin - £6.95.  The muffin was tiny and was warm, not toasted.  The scrambled eggs were dry and the dry cured bacon was part bone dry and part burned.  The coffee was ok.

I don't mind paying for top value food and surroundings but this wasn't it I'm afraid.

“Great food, helpful staff and good value”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Dawn works hard to make fantastic cakes, yummy soups and lots more. I really enjoyed the mulled spiced apple juice at Christmas. Today I had chunky home made veg soup and a piece of orange and lemon cake - gluten free.

“Small but friendly”
Reviewed January 13, 2013 via mobile

This is a small cafe/restaurant. There was only one member of staff both serving and behind the counter. Despite it being very busy she coped very well. I'd ordered a sandwich and was very pleased with what I received which was both filling and well presented. All in all a great place to visit.
