“Great Location - lacking in customer care”

We stayed here for the races and the zoo. When we arrived had to wait for staff to give us rooms keys as they where serving food in the bar. Then we had to find our own room which was no hardship but it would have been nice to have been shown.

Breakfast was between 08.00 and 09.00 and was very limited (cereal and full english) and when we asked for more toast they said the allocated 1 slice per person!!!

The room was tatty and extremelly hot which made for an uncomfortable night sleep. As for the shower......it would not stay in the holder on the wall and would not turn off properly so all night we had the sound of running water.

We needed to change for the races and before we had finished getting ready we where told to leave our room otherwise they would not make the bed etc.

Our trip was for 3 nights and on the final night they where doing building work under our room.....we had drills and saws going from 22.30 until early hours of the morning. This made for no sleep (but guess who was first for breakfast) and no one in the hotel offered any explantion.

There were two members of staff that we cann't fault but as for the rest I would not stay there again.

This is the worst nights sleep I have ever had in hotel, B&B etc. The pub has a lot of good things going for it great location, lovely building, nice strong shower however there is a big BIG problem.

The bed was so awful that we unable to manage more than a few hours sleep in total despite being tired and going to bed early.

What riled is that when we complained they fully admitted that they knew about the problem 'had mattresses on order' but were willing to offer us nothing over and above a meaningless apology. Had I not been so tired I may have pushed it further.

I would advise any friend not to stay there.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a stag do (booked by someone else). All we really needed was a place to sleep, but that proved way harder than it should've.

If you use their car park, be careful when you drive in; there's a paving slab raised in the middle of the ramp and no matter how slow you go over it you scrape the underneath of your car (and mine's not a low car).

The pub itself is best described as olde worlde - average beer selection and friendly bar staff. No real complaints about the bar, and the people in our group who ate here said the food was ok.

The real problems start when you go to the rooms. Very very out of date and tired, poorly decorated and not what you'd describe as clean. The bathroom had mould on the ceiling and on the walls, the hot tap dripped/ran constantly (so not able to have cold water to clean your teeth) and shower only suitable if you're under five foot and a bit.

The beds have ill fitting sheets and are covered with a sheet and extremely old blanket. The first night when I got in to bed I found that I could feel every single spring and that the springs had worn unevenly. This meant that I was tipped to one side and had no chance of sleep. To make matters worse the windows are paper thin and so every noise outside can be heard. At 5:30am the water heater starts and makes one hell of a racket, increasing the drip of the hot tap and reverberating throughout the pipes all round the hotel.

Breakfast is included, but available to anyone who walks in - £3 for a full english might sound like good value but you get what you pay for........

It is a cheap and cheerful place to stay, but not one that I will ever stay at again. And would certainly not recommend it. There are much better places ro stay in Chester; plenty in a similar price bracket.

I had booked a twin room and got a double, so had to share a bed with my friend. The room was tiny and cold. The bed had no springs and the bathroom had a VERY mould shower curtain. You have to check out at 10am and if you're still eating breakfast at 9.30, you are asked to leave the eating area. Although it was cheap, it certainly wasn't cheerful. I doubt we could have got much done if we had complained as the lady seemed to do all the jobs and didn't have time to speak. They also don't answer the phone, so if you do get a room, well done!!

Booked the Pied Bull Inn for 2 nights for the premier suite and a twin room. We were over for the graduation in chester cathedral and the Pied Bull was an excellent place to stay. It wasan 8 minute walk to the Northgate Arena where the graduands collect their robes and a 5 minute walk to the cathedral. The location was perfect. It really is an olde worlde inn with wonky floors , beams and a lovely, friendly atmosphere. Rooms were clean and comfortable, power shower, tv with freeview, trouser press, tea and coffeemaking facilities, etc. Breakfast was included where you could have a full english if desired with juice, cereal toast, tea etc. Main meals were absolutely fine with a good choice of bar/grill menu. This isa very good value hotel right in the centre of chester, close to all the shops and amenities. If you want luxury i suggest you go to the Grosvenor Hotel and spa. Staff were pleasant and helpful too. Hope to return to return to Chester and will stay at the Pied Bull.

We have just returned from our stay in the Pied Bull in Chester...and we can honestly say we had a fab time. Our first night was halloween, and what a better place to stay than a "Haunted" pub. The halloween theme was great. Plenty of fancy dress, and a good atmosphere.
The pub was about 5 mins from the town centre, which was great.. no lugging shopping miles and no expense of a taxi.
The room we had was in the attic but that said, it was good value for money. It was clean and comfy, and most important it was warm. The food in the pub was good, plenty of choice and a good price. The staff were very friendly, and worked very hard. We had a good hearty breakfast both mornings.
I read the reviews on here before i booked and would like to dissagree with all the negative reviews that were put on. For £65.00 per room per night, it was great in every aspect..Havent a clue what these people wanted. So if your in any doubt about booking to stay here take the bull (s`cuse the pun)by the horns and go for it...An old quirky pub thats full of character, good food, good comfort at a good price.x
