“Good wheelchair access but terrible rooms and service”
Reviewed July 20, 2010

We stayed here as the hotel had a roll-in-shower as my partner is in a wheelchair. The bathroom was fine and met our needs well, however the room was tiny, the bed was only a double and really only suitable for one person. Staff were unwilling to provide a roll out or extra linen, our room was loud as it was on the ground floor and near the public bathrooms. TV was blaring in the dining area during breakfast. We ended up canceling our stay and moving to another hotel (The Gate way to Wales - also good disabled facilities) of comparable price where we had a pleasant stay.

Just stayed for one night. Room was much as expected, 'tho not quite as modern as some others in HIE chain. No blue light in bathroom, oh dear, how can i live without a blue light i the bathroom? Good view over car park and the racecourse just behind. Couldn't quite see the winning post. Breakfast menu more limited than other HIE's but enjoyable all the same. Extremely convenient location, Chester Walls just 5 minutes walk away. Efficient car park person.

Encouraged by Tripadvisor reviews, we booked in here for a night en route from South Wales to North Yorkshire. Chester was a new experience for us and the hotel's location -just a few minutes from the attractive and interesting city centre - was perfect. Our room was quite close to the railway line but the double (or triple?) glazing kept the room quiet. The room was cleverly designed to make the most of available space; the bathroom with power shower was fine, although it could have done with a fan to clear the steam. Our rate of £70 included a large buffet breakfast, with hot eggs and sausages, and a free newspaper. If we're ever in Chester again we would stay here.

A group of nine of stayed for four days on a cycling holiday, & had a very pleasant time. The hotel is very clean & tidy, and the staff are friendly. Breakfast was buffet style, with sausage & eggs available. It's only a few hundred yards into the city centre, or there is a lovely walk in along the river, around the racecourse. The car park is free & has loads of space. All-in-all, very comfortable & convenient.

Our family recently stayed in two rooms and would recommend the HIE Chester-Racecourse. Key features: great location near city centre and free car park. The staff were efficient yet friendly with check in and check out hassle free. The rooms were modestly sized but worked well for our family, including combination sofa pull out bed. The hotel during our stay represented good value for money.

Considerations: there were several hen parties during our stay. Our room was relatively noisy as hens returned from their night out.

Would recommended this Holiday Inn Express more than Holiday Inn Chester South we're we'd also recently stayed.

Me and my friend stayed in a twin room on Easter Sunday. The twin room we had only had single beds, which was fine for us but some people might have prefered doubles.

The bathroom was small but adequate with only a shower, no bath. The hotel was a last minute booking a few days before we went.

We had a very clean room with a view over the racecourse. Plenty of towels, tea and coffee making facilities provided and a hairdryer. There were spare pillows. It was a small room but we were only there one night so it didn't matter.

Breakfast was included: it was a buffet style with a large range incuding cereals, toast, yoghurt, bacon and eggs. This was constantly being renewed as items were eaten.
When my friend asked at reception if there was any soya milk (she's allergic to cows milk) she was given a brand new container of soya milk just for her. We were advised it should have been requested the night before but we had not been aware of this so had not done so, but this hadn't been a problem to us.

Reception staff were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is in a fantastic location for exploring Chester. It is just five minutes walk from the roman walls and five minutes further is the shops. The hotel has its own free car park. which is only for the hotel guests. There is pay and display parking across the road. The river Dee is only a few minutes walk from the hotel. It was a slight rise from the hotel to the walls and the shops but Chester itself is fairly flat.

The only problem I did find was that neither the racecourse or the hotel were sign from within Chester. I had expected the racecourse to be signed but it wasn't. That is not the hotel's fault at all. There are often events on at the racecourse which may be signed.

I would definately stay here again.

We had a really lovely room, well-appointed, clean and fresh. Unfortunately the internet didn't work in our room, but the hotel lobby was warm and welcoming, and we had a good connection in there. Also good parking which can be a real problem for some hotels.
