“Not what we expected”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

Perhaps we should have read a few more reviews as we were disappointed by the Artichoke. We are still not sure whether it was a pub as the scramble at the bar suggested when we entered. Is it a pub that does bar food as the pizza list suggests or a bistro that doubles as a quick food restaurant that the short order menu and 'bin-end' wine list suggests.

We had booked a table but when we entered no one took our name and we were shown to a table in the inner area which was empty at the time. I asked for a lager expecting a peroni or similar but was given a tasteless bud from the well. I ordered a sardine based starter expecting fresh sardines as I would get at any good restaurant in Cornwall but these were either tinned or vac-packed and rather tasteless. Unfortunately our mains were equally uninspiring so we went without dessert paid the bill and walked down the canal bank to Alexander's to finish our evening with some good jazz.

“About time!”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

Finally somebody has done something good with the steam mill! 4 of us went on Friday evening and a great time was had by all. Good menu, good wine selection at reasonable prices and friendly, knowledgable staff. Good atmosphere helped by the fact you are not crammed in or feel hurried out, considering it was very busy.

Looking forward to going again.

“Over Rated”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

This was our first visit and having read such great reviews were quite disappointed. The location was superb and must be so nice on a warm summer's day. Inside it is quite large, well designed and attractive to the eye. The bar area is a problem as we were meeting friends and were 30 minutes early, so a drink was required to pass the time. The bar staff appeared unfriendly, no smiles when serving, no welcome smile, yet service was fast ... maybe that's the problem. Didn't actually like the horrid green T-Shirts the bar staff were wearing. For some reason the colour doesn't lend itself to a clean fresh look, but I understand the idea. Now we have the drinks where to sit? Tried three tables but each time were removed by serving staff, who were on the scene instantly telling us we couldn't sit on a table where there were knives and forks.... strangely, not even on our reserved table!!!
We noticed another four customers who bought drinks, sat down on the only table without knives and forks and there were only two chairs. No help was offered to provide two extra chairs. In fact, when the request was made the waitress had to refer the question to a higher level!!! Also, we had tried this table, it was by the door and absolutely freezing there, especially with smokers going in and out.
The menu was varied with plenty of options. The food, when it arrived was adequate and the service was quick, polite and served with a smile. I had carrot cake as a sweet and it was very tasty.
All in all, it was a reasonable experience but probably wouldn't bother going there again. In my opinion this restaurant is trying to be too much. Is it a restaurant? Is it a cafe bar? Is it a pub? I felt it needs to define itself. Overall we paid inflated Restaurant menu prices and received up market pub food.

“A treat”
Reviewed October 30, 2012 via mobile

We stumbled across this place by accident. The plan was to spend half an hour with my 14 year old daughter in the Old Hawkers Arms before catching a train but they didn't allow children, so we walked a little further up the canal and found Artichokes.

A beautifully converted warehouse that reminded me of places I have been to in Manhattan. Very chilled music and some extremely attentive staff. After a couple of long drinks we were tempted by the food which was delicious and very reasonably priced. I can highly recommend the chocolate and lavender dessert with honeycomb.

The food and atmosphere was so good we stayed for 3 hours and got a later train.
