“Pay to get into a church? No thanks”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

I am not religeous at all, but love to visit churches. I am originally from Durham and I enjoy comparing churches/catherdrals with that in my home town (they all come up wanting ;-)). I understand that those types of building require a lot of upkeep, but a charge to visit a place of worship? To me, that's morally wrong.

“Stunning”

Loved the free guided tour ( portable player). Very serene, peaceful. Loved the history...the early catholic buildings were stunning. Good food offer in the refectory.

“Amazing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

Very beautiful church! There is so much detail to look at. The services are very good too (usually 4 services a day: 10am, 11:30am, 3:30pm, and 6:30pm). Lots of events are held here such as the Chester Mystery Plays, a few around Christmas time, and the graduation ceremony for they University of Chester. Admission is free! Highly recommend a visit here.

“Not one of Britain's best”

Chester Cathedral, although it is the seat of a Bishop, is not a true cathedral. The original Norman cathedral is now called St John's Church, but after Henry 8th 's social engineering, an existing Benedictine Abbey in the centre of the city was re-named Chester Cathedral and St John's was demoted to a parish church. The present 'Cathedral' was the Abbey Church and it retains its cloisters and its atmosphere. It fell into disrepair until the Victorians restored it and beautified it with little turrets. It lacks the soaring majesty of a true cathedral like Salisbury or Durham, but instead is an interesting historical hodgepodge. Of special interest are the misericords in the choir. Lacking a large city hall, the City uses the Cathedral for concerts (in spite of its poor acoustics) and the University uses it for degree ceremonies. A well-designed song school has recently been built on.

“"Chester Cathedral"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

Chester Cathedral is situated right in the middle of the City. This historic Cathedral is a lovely building. The stained glass windows, choir pews and cloisters are just lovely to see. There are also quiet places you can go and sit down.
