“great pub”
Reviewed November 27, 2011

refurbished this year and its now on my must visit list when in Chester, quality food and drinks just add to the experience. Staff are nice and professional but struggle when its busy to cope. Give it a go you'll like it

“one of the best places in Chester”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

I have actually eaten many times at the Red Lion, probably ten to twelve times now. I eat out regularly and this is one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Chester. The food is excellent, the service is excellent, the drinks selection is excellent and the prices are very fair. Right now the ham hock is fantastic but In ten to twelve visits I have never been dissapointed, I lived in London for many years and this is by far the best Nickolssons I have eaten in. The only thing which surprises me is that the place is not busier, it is always easy to get a table, this may be that before the renovation it was an awful place and it can take a long time for a pub to loose a bad reputation. This is a gem of a place!

“On a downwards spiral”
Reviewed July 14, 2011

Used to be a favourite once it had its complete makeover early in 2011 when the London based Nicholson's took the running of it (it used to be a real 'locals' pub).

Unfortunately, the food is all very heavy 'pub grub' with no lighter options, especially as we are in summer.

The other main off-putting issue is the Deputy Manager is always hanging out of the side door having a fag, really not what you want to see every time you walk past!
