Have just returned from third stay at this hotel since it was taken over. It used to be The Roma. First two visits we were given rooms in the annexe which had lovely comfortable beds, although the shower in room 25 was broken. Room 2 on the ground floor was great. On third visit we were given room 2 in the main hotel but we had to ask for the room to be changed as the bed was rock hard and creaked when I sat on it. Annexe rooms seem to be much better. They were very good about moving us and gave us a comfortable room in the annexe again. Breakfasts are good, freshly cooked and plentiful. It is very good value for money at the £42 we paid for a double room with breakfast, particularly with the free parking, but prices will no doubt go up when it is refurbished. Staff, especially the manager , are friendly and most helpful. Can't beat it for location and value at the moment.

Clearly very dated in design, especially in the Annexe building where we stayed, but I understand this is being addressed and I look forward to staying again to see the improvements when complete.

The two main reasons to stay at this hotel are:

1) The superb location inside the walls
2) The free parking, which is unheard of in Chester

As others have mentioned, we also found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts to be good.

All in all a very enjoyable stay which I would recommend to others, provided you understand and accept the rather dated design currently!

Great location within the city walls and just a minutes walk from the river. This hotel has been taken over by new owners recently who are planning to renovate it. At the moment it is a very tired looking hotel - broken furniture, shabby decoration, dated bar area. The breakfast room was pleasant with the breakfast was freshly cooked and of good portions.

The staff were very friendly although a tad inattentive especially at the bar where my partner waited for sometime to be served and then gave up! Our room was adequate but shabby and the bathroom was very poor. The shower water was either freezing or scorching nothing inbetween and the shower door was covered in black mold with an overall unpleasant smell. In view of the note left in the room apologising for the shabbiness and saying they had plans to improve the hotel we would have thought they would have paid special attention to cleanliness. The carpet had white specks over it indicating it hadn't been hoovered between guests.

Due to its location we would stay here again but would hope the level of cleanliness would have improved. £85 for a Saturday night was not value for money!

This hotel is currently being re furbished and therefore really good rates are being offered. It is in a prime position, has excellent staff and the parking is also a bonus. Most of the hotel needs a significant upgrade and when it is done it will be a super hotel. As it is at present, it has comfortable beds and very clean linen and towels. The breakfast was wonderful and we also had a tasty lunch in the bar.

The bright orange carpet and curtains along with the dated and worn furniture did not detract from this lovely, cosy hotel with a great atmosphere. It is still well worth a stay at the present time and offers excellent value for money.

My lovely hubby and I wanted a weekend in Chester so as we couldn't get into our usual hotel "The Mill" due to it being the bank holiday we opted it for this little treasure. Yes it needs a little updating but the new ownners are well aware of this and renovation is due to take place I believe, in the not to distant future. Free parking if your lucky, there is a small area round the back.
We stopped in the annexe now part of the T.G.B.H.The room was spotless, staff very pleasant and the breakfeast excellent, made fresh as you ordered..
Try the Brewary Tap opposite for great ale and lunch and Chester Tandoori for evening meals...all excellent.
As regulars to the fine city of Chester we will be booking this little gem again!

Just returned from a one evening stay for my anniversary with mixed feelings. Our room was clean bet extremely dated, the shower was broke off the wall, there was a large hole in the wall where someone had punched it through and basically the room needs ripping out and starting all over again. The couple in the next room obviously couldnt read so was smoking all the while. On a more positive note the location was very good and the breakfast was of a decent standard. All in all however i wouldnt return in a hurry ,and as a regular traveller to Chester would prefer to stay elsewhere.
