“Okay, but skip breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2008

Did the classic, booked the hotel then checked out the reviews, so was pretty apprehensive. There was no need though.

I was presented at check-in with a proper key for the room, rather than one of those key cards, which have always been unrealiable. The public areas are well kept and appear to be recently decorated.

The room was generally bright and clean and was a fair size. The bathroom was quite small, but had a bath with shower over and again, was generally clean.

The bed was formed of twins zipped together. The room also had a TV with skysports and a stereo, and then the usual, tea, coffee, hairdryer. All linen was spotless.

Breakfast was the let-down.

It is buffet style and although there were two staff, they were clearly run off their feet. On arrival, there is no-one checking off which rooms have been for breakfast, giving the impression anyone could walk in regardless of if they'd paid the extra.

Service is disjointed - some people were asked whether they wanted tea or coffee and served. My table was missed and when I asked, was told 'the coffee's over there - help yourself'. The other staff member looked alarmed when he saw me helping myself - perhaps suggests no-one has given clear instructions to the breakfast team.

Anyway, onto the food! It didn't quite appear edible, though the chef was replenishing continually so it was fresh. Played safe and went with beans, tomatoes and toast. All luke warm and undercooked. I wouldn't have risked meat or eggs. The hash browns were impossibly small and resembled rice krispies gone wrong. The following day I stuck with cornflakes and toast. Which were fine!

Overall, its a shame. All the staff I spoke to were great, very polite and helpful and with some consistancy and attention to detail, this has the makings of a good hotel. I would stay there again but would breakfast at one of the independent cafe's in Chester.

Thank you for your comments. We have now reviewed our service standards in the restaurant and employed a new breakfast supervisor and also trained the exsisting staff.

Stayed at this hotel for just one night and found it very average for a 3 star. We booked this hotel due to the free zoo tickets as this was our reason for the stay and brought the cost of the room down.

We booked a standard double room and it has to be the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in. The bathroom was incredible small with a toilet small hand basin and bath just fitting in, leaving very little room to move. The bed was the smallest double bed I have ever seen and the matress was rock hard. The room was very tired and felt very old.

On the good side the Hotel is in a excellent location only 10 minutes from town and 2 minutes from the train station. Arrived after 6 so parked in the pay and display next door for free then moved the car onto the street at 9 in the morning for a hour before we set off for the Zoo so didnt pay to park the car. The breakfast is really good the selection was supberb and staff very helpful.

Generally thought there was a geniune effort to please the guests in the hotel. I think though if I have stayed more than one night the coach party of pensioners will have worn me down they are everywhere making a nusiance of themselves and are incredibly rude.

In summary ok hotel for one night if, you want to stay for longer would need a much bigger room and bathroom and better mattress if such a room exsits. Only booked this hotel for the zoo tickets and wouldnt stay here again unless a similar offer was on as definately not worth £69 per night without the offer. Have paid £40 a night and got a much bigger modern room than this in other hotels.

Just stayed this weekend 15-17th August for 2 nights. We were upgraded free of charge to an Executive Room as it was our anniversary. When we arrived we opened the door to a twin room so we went downstairs and asked if we could have the double that we booked. Paul at reception apologised and sent us through to the bar for a complimentary drink. Within 20 mins the room was ready for us which was very nice. Small in size but with the two twin beds zipped together it made a king size bed. Nice LCD TV, and stereo system for use with the ipod. The bathroom was spacious with a full sized bath and shower. I don't know what was executive about it as we didn't see the standard room that we had booked for £59 for Friday and £89 for Saturday with breakfast...... well that's where it all went wrong!
We didn't make Saturday but on Sunday we made the effort to get up for it and wish we hadn't bothered. We waited to be seated as not everyone had paid for breakfast so we didn't just want to jump in there. We were eventually acknowledged and told to sit anywhere. We sat and waited to be asked if we wanted tea and coffee but after ten mins we went to find her and ask her. When I did find her (it wasn't even busy ), she said yes and we still waited and it didn't turn up after ten mins. We went to the buffet to help ourself to the breakfast - they had run out of eggs, bacon and mushrooms and the rest didn't look great particularly the black charcoal pudding. So we just finished our orange juice and left.....wish I hadn't bothered to get up!

Anyway...... it was only a little moan, the reception staff are great and the room was nice and it was nice of them to give us a free upgrade. It is only a ten minute walk to town which is much better than waiting for a taxi to get home in the early hours which we have done many times before. We have stayed in hotels in Hoole Road and at the Ramada before but they are a little too far out to walk back. We would stay here again but wouldn't bother paying the extra for the breakfast.

The car park next door looks a little dodgy so we parked at the Queens opposite for £6 for 24 hours which is secure.

Close to railway station and sister hotel (Queen Hotel). Recently refurbished rooms, comfortable bed. However, bathroom had escaped any modernisation. Bar meals were excellent, tasty and well presented (£9.50). Breakfast very poor. Scrambled egg was like cold, firm custard with the skin on, yuk. Best bit was the packet cereal. Overall, okay for a one night stay, would have preferred to pay £50 not £69!

I stayed with my fiancée in Westminster Hotel- Chester-UK for 2 days during February 2008. We left the room to visit the city centre. By our return we discovered that a thief had broken into our room! The Hotel customer services did absolutely nothing about it and said that it is not their responsibility to ensure the security of the rooms in their hotel!

We have stayed in many hotels in the past, Westminster Hotel- Chester-UK is by far the worst hotel ever.

There was nothing stolen from this guests room, they were just after compensation. I totally deplore their comments about my fantastic hotel and staff.
We do take all complaints seriously and there was no evidence of a so called thief entering their room.

after reading several poor reviews of this hotel,i was very concerned as to what we'd let ourselves into. How wrong we were, the staff were friendly, room lovely and clean and the breakfast superb!! the town is a 10 min walk however go around and across the road to avoid the nasty subway which was scary esp at night .we had a lovely stay and was pleasantly surprised.the only flaw was no atmosphere in the bar ,we used the queens over the road.
