“Better than expected”
Reviewed October 23, 2013

Having read the reviews, we were a bit apprehensive about staying there in October 2013. We were part of a party of 14. Most were satisfied with their rooms although two did change. Our room (204) was fine except the window catch was broken and didn't open and it was a warm spell of weather. I had the feeling the rooms were a little down at heel. However the food was fine (especially for the cost) and the staff really pleasant and helpful. The rooms let it down a bit otherwise, fine.

Room Tip: Some of our party claimed the rooms on the front (road) side were noisy.

We booked the last two rooms available and because of this one of the rooms was ‘upgraded’ for free. The upgraded room was perfectly acceptable, with a flat screen TV, comfortable king sized bed and smart modern bathroom, sadly the room that was not upgraded, was gloomy, tired and poky and I didn’t feel that it was really worth the £85 we paid. But the hotel is in a good position, just outside the railway station and a short walk along the canal to the city centre. The complimentary toiletries were meagre, but there was a good supply of tea, coffee and biscuits in both rooms. The TV in the standard room (not upgraded) didn’t work and the light in the VERY small bathroom was broken. The public areas of the hotel are good, both the bar and lounge comfortable, clean and warm. I’m actually undecided whether I would stay here again on our next visit to Chester, I may see what other hotels have to offer for the price before returning here.

After a busy day visiting Chester University with our daughter my husband and I were too tired and hungry to bother going back into the city for dinner in the evening and having read on the hotel menu that the head chef Liam and his brigade took pride in their food it seemed worth eating in the hotel as the prices were very reasonable, (more or less what you’d pay at a chain pub that has its ‘menu’ delivered on a lorry). Bad decision, I now wish that we had walked back into the city with our daughter and her friend. The food was acceptable for the money I suppose, but really not what we expected from the hotel ‘blurb’. I had a lamb pie and mash. The ‘mash’ was in fact reconstituted potato and the gravy on the pie was salty and instant. My husband’s fish and chips were a similar story, although the chips were very good, thick cut and crispy, the fish was pre-battered and the peas were very odd, over sweet crushed garden peas. The cheese and biscuits have a very generous supply of cheeses, but only four crackers but the sticky toffee pudding was nice and a very (too) large portion. All in all not the meal we were expecting from a ‘chef’ and his ‘brigade’, more like a meal warmed up from the freezer. So, my advice would be, don’t eat dinner in the hotel, or if you do, don’t expect too much – think a chain pub with a kitchen manned by part time students and the instructions to the microwave and you will know what to expect.

That said the buffet breakfast the following morning was very good, nice selection, as much as you wanted and constantly topped up and kept fresh, this is a meal I would recommend and it makes the price of the room seem more reasonable. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, the location perfect and the breakfast good. The dinner menu is to be avoided, unless like us you’re too hungry and tired to take the short walk into the city.

This is very much a hotel of contrasts.

Booked here while on weekend in Chester. Overall impression was that it wasn't awful but wasn't great either. Our room was at the back of the hotel which we were told would be quieter but you could still hear the music from the private party (I presume). The room was also very hot and the window was screwed shut and unable to be opened, there was no air con or fan to cool the room down instead and the flies seemed to like the condensation on the window. The tv was very old with a tiny screen and had an awful reception. Made worse by the fact you could see into another room along the corridor that had a flat screen tv. The shower did not have constant pressure and seemed like there was a pump making it work as the pressure came in fits and starts. On the positive we were able to get breakfast early so my husband could get to the Chester marathon on time, the room was clean and staff friendly.

Our trip was split between Chester and Telford, staying here on the Friday and Sunday nights with Telford sandwiched in-between. It was bad enough literally living out of a suitcase but when you have a room the size of a dog kennel to open the suitcase in then things are not good. Room 106 is to be avoided. I could stand between the (hard!) single beds and touch both walls! Very few powerpoints, even fewer TV channels, no view and no ventilation! Wi-fi was hit and miss at best. The floor above creaked and the sound came through the ceiling all night. Staff were very helpful and friendly on the plus side, and the decent breakfast helped too. The location was very close to the city centre which meant a ten minute walk to the shops, but the rooms need a lot of attention if I'm to consider staying here ever again.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere!

Stayed in this hotel as part of a coach party last weekend and can say honestly it was the worst hotel experience of my life. The first room was down in the basement and it was awful - small and dreadfully smelly, the floorboards creaked. The food was reasonable just. The only good thing I Can say was that the staff were friendly and helpful in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms on top floor were certainly of a better standard

The hotel is in a really good zone (near the railway station) and not too far from the city center. The structure is quite old but comfortable with all the services. The people are really nice and friendly.
