“Very Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2013

During our shopping trips to Chester over the years we always start our morning with coffee and breakfast at the Grosvenor. It has always been an excellent way to start the day.
This time however it had noticeably gone down hill. On entering the Arkle bar lounge the waiter was more interested in his computer than us. No personal touches like a polite "good morning", or taking the coats as usual. Coffee was half the size it used to be and no chocolate brownies, other guest seemed to have these but the waiter was unfriendly and not attentive at all. The bacon sandwiches we also cold.
Two regular customers who may never return?
5 star.......more like 2!

We were looking for a city break, hotel right in the city centre, with a spa and are we glad we found this hotel!
It was our first anniversary and from booking right through to departing the service we received was exemplary. We had a standard room yet it was beautifully spacious - especially the Queen sized bed! The bathroom off a lobby area was a good size, with plenty of amenities.
We were very fortunate to get into the Simon Radley restaurant for dinner and this really was the icing on the cake for a romantic getaway. The staff so attentive, yet respectful of privacy, and the food was out of this world!
We arrived at the hotel a little early, but this was not a problem, the concierge took our bags and off we went exploring the city for some lunch. When we returned later in the afternoon, our bags had been taken to our room.
Nothing was too much for the staff, from offering to bring our car from the car-park round to the front of the hotel, to making us feel incredibly relaxed - as people with stressful jobs it can often be difficult to unwind on a short break, however I fail to see how anyone cannot relax in this beautiful hotel.
Whilst there are other hotels in Chester, they all looked rather too modern / contemporary for this historic city - the Chester Grosvenor definitely hits all the right notes, and is in the most perfect location, especially if you want to wander the walls, or wander around the shops.
It is definitely on our list of hotels to go back to (and that list has very stringent rules!).

Given these watering prices it all feels a bit indifferent. The very old fashioned feel may well suit some, but I'd rather have something a little more contemporary. The wifi not working on the second floor was disappointing even when asking at reception for someone to look at it, and the breakfast while elegant is shockingly expensive for what it is. Next time I'm going to try my luck elsewhere in town. #underwhelmed

We stayed here for two nights mid week in mid December and had a most enjoyable and relaxing stay. The hotel is in an excellent location. Bedroom and bathroom very comfortable. Staff excellent, particularly the friendly Concierge. Food delicious. For a sinful treat have a chocolate shot and selection of mini desserts in the chocolate shop! Divine!

The chester grovesner is a top notch hotel.set in an excellent city with great history and shops galore.the staff where polite and offered good service.no problems.the room was standard but still impresive..very clean and tidy.the decor is great for us being almost victorian in style so not modern.the la brasserie restaurant was very good the food is excellent even the bread is to die for....my only advice is do your research first as its expensive to stay, car park is at the back so just park yourself..as if you get porter to do it might incur a charge.but be warned you have to pay £10 for parking and then maybe extra £ 10 from hotel..which they didnt tell us.they will ask you to pay an extra £200 security charge before you get to room so in total £ 400 odd youll have to pay for one night but you get £200 back if you dont spend on food or drink in hotel.which was happily given back in cash on leaving.people say they have problems with this and extra charges but its very simple and clear. Also you get a hefty VAT charge .id say dont touch mini bar atall...very overpriced..some lovely bars just round corner. So great experience..i would go there again..very expensive but worth it.

Stayed in this hotel for the first time. Every thing is really very nice, great location with good service. I booked in under a bed and breakfast tariff. There was no mention of supplements. Eg. If you have an omelette for breakfast there's an £18! Supplement.
Local call from the bedroom phone was over £20. C'mon management stop the gotcha's.

Just to reiterate though this is a really nice hotel.

For a 5 star hotel ...dissappointed. The hotel is an old hotel and the decor is lovely , however it just lacks the 5 star experience. We arrived for a special evening away, and we did get a suite as a complimentary upgrade, however for what we paid , all you get is a posh bed and complimentary wi-fi, well it's a big bed but I didn't feel the lavish Egyptian cotton sheets at all, which I would expect in a 5 star hotel. In the suite , not even a complimentary bottle of water, and if you want tea and coffee you have to request it , and not even a ginger nut, nothing. I have stayed in some hotels in my time over the years and it is a far shout from 5 star with regards to complimentary items in the room. You get more in a premier inn. Towels hard and over used, not soft as you would expect for 5 star . The rooms are nice , more traditional but not a wow factor. We did book to dine in le brassiere, but we cancelled and went round the corner to McDonald's steak and grill, fantastic and far better value for money. The hotel is a nightmare to find, badly signposted, actually there is none, I wouldn't stay here again , there are better hotels around that give you more for 4 star. Oh and the minibar , don't ask prices are hefty, I don't mind paying, but I refuse to give them 4 times the price of the high street, and as the hotel is on the high street you would be nuts to pay.
