We recently visited this restaurant for the fourth time and have to say the quality of the food and service is superb. The freshness and style of menu is unlike any other Italian in Chester and the owners go out of there way to make sure you have an enjoyable evening. Highly recommended.

This restaurant is situated in what I would describe as the rougher part of town close to the rowdy bars. There is no atmosphere inside the restraunt and it does not take you to Italy like other restraunts in Chester do.

From entering the restaurant you can not fault the staff for their customer attention and the service they provide is very good.

The menu was a disapointment. It was over priced and nothing really stood out on either the starters or mains. I got the impression that La Cantina is adopting a different aproach to Italian cuisine. Its lost the pasta, pizza, steak, fish and poultry section of the menu and trying to introduce a fine dining experience with selective dishes that do not really stand out and give you that "what shall I choose moment"

We left the restraunt feeling that we did not get value for money and felt a little ripped off with the over priced food and extortunate drinks prices.

In short I would not recommend this Italian restaurant and cant immagine it being around in 12 months time.. Sorry..

Thankyou for your comments and your custom.

We were not aware you were dissatisfied as cannot recall you having the courtesy to raise any of these points directly whilst at the restaurant. We would have been very happy to discuss our pricing, food content and vary a palate according to something offmenu had you raised your points whilst at La Cantina.

You are of course entitled to your comments but with respect they seem more akin to someone who might be better suited to places like Bella Pasta and Pizza Express etc which are fine places if that is the style of what you understand and enjoy in Italian cuisine, albeit you will not really find it as commonplace throughout Italy!!. The comments did not read as someone who has any appreciation of authentic Italian cuisine, or its menu content as in Italy; I am not sure the local residents adjacent in places like Dee Hills Park across the road or apartments all around us, many of whom are regular repeat customers with discerning tastes and a developed appreciation of 'atmosphere', would really agree your comments about it being the rough part of town since they live in a private enclave with properties generally in the upper quartiles of hundreds of thousands but to be frank it seems to me a rather immature and illeducated commentary generally and not sure of he relevance of your perception on that (and I wonder if entirely independent as to the nature of your comments or ); you can find cheaper wines for sure, £5 or so in Wetherspoonsif that is what you want or midrange volume produced wines from national large scale distributors, and my reading into your views is that may be more you- our overall assessment, and i think would be shared by the literally hundreds of discerning customers who enjoy La Cantina ( for example the whole team from Chester's leading gastro pub last night) is that you may be more suited to the Italian equivalent of angloItalian 'tikka marsala' concoctions ie Italian origination dishes that have been largely anglicised such as 'spaghetti bolognese', than properly prepared fresh Italian food as typically eaten in Italian regions, using a combination of best local and Italian resource, and small holder wines lovingly grown under authentic viniculture in regions of Italy.
Saluti e buona fortuna , mentre

A mixed group of 8 of us ate here on a Thursday night. The overall impression was that the food was very well made from scratch and the staff were friendly but there was something lacking in the management of the restaurant as a whole, particularly in the area of stock control. Maybe it was just an off night. I was really looking forward to it but came away feeling disappointed.

-Freshly made food and delicious homemade breads
-Friendly Staff

-Very quiet (except for us ... see next point) with no atmosphere
-Had 3 oval shaped tables put together (sideways) which didn't really work and couldn't communicate without shouting to the other people at the other end of the table so we probably disturbed the other couple of occupied tables in the restaurant.
- The parma ham and melon starter was served without the ham. To be fair to the waitress she did spot this and bring out a plate of ham to accompany the plate of melon.
-There were limited options on the dessert menu (4 choices - choice of ice creams, cheese plate, tirimisu and one other) - everyone chose tirimisu and were told there was none left and we should have told them when we arrived at the restaurant.
-3 or 4 people in the group were drinking lager and on the 2nd round of drinks were told they had run out and had to go out and buy more.

We've eaten here a few times since it opened and have never been disappointed. It's a bit quiet and empty feeling re atmosphere but the food is very good and the service friendly. They do a 2 courses and glass of wine menu during the week which is good value and varied with lots of choice. Bringing bread to the table and serving the main course with a salad is a nice touch. They also do a cooking school on a Monday which we've never tried but seems a good idea. We will certainly eat there again.
