Reviewed October 10, 2012

Stayed one weekend with a group of my girlfriends and it was excellent. The location is right in the heart of the city (Park at the Market Carpark - 5 mins walk) so it is great for shopping and for the pubs and clubs. Our room was lovely, great furnishings, comfy bed, dressing table (so many hotels etc never think about where you put your make up on, but the Commercial does, v important to ladies) and the bathroom was amazing (better than some luxury hotels I've stayed in) with a full body shower. Yes there is noise from the bars downstairs but the hotel doesnt hide that fact, we stayed up till the bars closed it wasnt a problem. The bars in the Commercial were great, full of atmosphere and really great bar staff, I couldnt see the cocktail menu so the bar man gave me his iphone to use as a torch - great service! Breakfast was lovely, they accommodated all our individual requests and staff were very attentive. All in all it was a great weekend and hopefully we will return soon!!

Dear Ladies, thank you so much for such a lovely review. Unfortunately I was away the weekend you stayed but the staff had told me what a great group you were. It's so uplifting to host residents such as yourselves who appreciate what The Commercial is all about, who join in the fun and have as good a time as the staff. We are a destination venue, great DJ's, fabulous building and perfect location. I'm so glad you had a great weekend and we all look forward to seeing you all again. Kind regards Rebecca

We stayed for just one night midweek and really loved the place. Great location, fabulous room, free wifi, and nice beer. Not a whole lot not to like about this place, the staff were great, very helpful and we paid less than we would have staying in a faceless travelodge, Would certainly return.

We stayed midweek, there was a little noise outside but the windows were really good. People complaining about noise in city centre hotels probably need to visit a few more to see what noise really is!

Dear Jason and Lou, thank you for your review. It's great for me to read reviews such as yours with regards to Travelodge especially. It shows that people are shopping around and that we are competitive in the market. We have a fabulous location and The Commercial wouldn't be the same without the friendly staff. We look forward to seeing you again and thanks once again. Rebecca

Contemporary decor, clean and comfortable with superb amenities in a listed building. The bar is great no matter which of the three rooms you choose. Good hearty breakfast, well cooked good produce and spot on portion wise.
No parking but plenty of car parks within a minute or twos walk and you couldn't be closer to the city centre whether shopping or dining out.
Very friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble for them.
Highly recommended having spent considerably more at other hotels and not been as satisfied with my stay.
Will definitely use this hotel again.

Room Tip: You can hear the customers in the bars and music if there is an event on which there wasn't when...

It's really almost impossible to make a difference between the Bar and the Hotel. In fact I think that they haven't done it yet. The staff is extremely kind but as it was my case, if you happen to be there one of the night shows you will probably have a very noisy night!.
No big complaints about the hotel in general terms but I think that if they intend to continue functioning as a hotel they will have to try to limit the access to the hotel for the other people, put hotel staff to run the hotel and not bar people to run the hotel.
Apart from these details I would recommend it only in case you are aware of this points, so as not to be disappointed from Chester which is a wonderful city.

Dear Mulber. Thank you for your review, it was most enlightening for me to read your comments regarding the hotel and bar.
You suggest that we have seperate staff for the hotel but we only have 5 rooms hence the staff I have multi task. It is usually myself who checks people in and serves the breakfast on a daily basis so residents can relate to one person, sometimes of course depending on the day this is not always possible. All my staff are trained to check guests in and out of the hotel as well as work behind the bar.
It would be impossible for me to limit the access to non residents, especially at weekends when we are one of the busiest bars in Chester and would not survive without that income.
All guests staying at a weekend are contacted in advance to reiterate the fact that we are a busy bar and have DJ's playing music until late. The majority confirm their reservation for this reason, they want to enjoy the party atmosphere and then have the luxury of staying instead of taxi's to alternative hotels.
We market the hotel and bar as a venue with DJ's at weekends and live music events throughout the year, it certainly has worked for us over the last 3 years and I'm sorry you didn't feel the same.
Kind regards, Rebecca

Stayed for the second time inside 12 months and the standard was just as high.
The location is perfect for enjoying Chester city centre shopping and its night life. The warm welcome and friendliness of the staff is superb and has to be enjoyed to be believed.
The decor is endlessly maintained to ensure a high standard, and is backed up by being both exceptionally clean and comfortable.
The breakfast is superb as is the copious amounts of tea and coffee
If you are going to Chester try his..... You won't be disappointed.

Dear Jim, thank you for your lovely review.
It's great to read comments from guests like yourselves who have stayed more than once and still enjoy their time with us. It certainly makes me proud of the staff who contiue to offer excellent customer service and are genuinely happy to see repeat guests.
The Commercial is a bit like the Forth Bridge, decoration is continual! We have just added wallpaper to the rooms which makes them even more comfortable if I do say so myself.
I'm sure we will see you again and look forward to that time.
Kind regards, Rebecca

The hotel is clearly trying to strike a balance between a pub/ hotel and does nt quite carry it off. I thought the rooms were good, general cleanliness average, breakfast very good. However the big problem was the noise which started about 4 am when a nearby nightclub closed and was compoubnded by the noise of barrels being delivered to nearby pubs at 6 am

Dear William, thank you for taking time to write on our page.
Unfortunately we are right in the middle of the city centre and that brings it's challenges. The noise you heard from the night club cannot be avoided, Chester has a large student population and a lot of places cater to them.
The barrel delivery nextdoor happens once a week on a Friday and I must disagree with regards to the time. I complained about it myself last year because we are a hotel and did not want residents disturbed too early, also I live here too! They now deliver after 7am and must be out of the City centre by 8am. If you had stayed from Sunday to Wednesday you probably would not have been disturbed at all.
Kind regards Rebecca
