Description: Hickory’s Smokehouse is Chester’s authentic American BBQ. Here you can enjoy a traditional style of cooking that has its roots in the US, but that we think deserves to be just as popular over here. Our menu offers two styles of BBQ. The southern-style ‘Smoker’ BBQ uses slow, wood-fired cooking in our specially imported American smoker oven. The northern-style ‘Yankee’ BBQ is cooked over sizzling hot coals. Both styles create unbelievably tender, delicious meat and fish.

“Pulled pork to die for”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

We visited Chester to meet up with an old friend and to give our 16 week old daughter her first outing outside of our Cambridgeshire home area. I remembered from 20 years a go the building being part of the Old Orleans restaurant chain. I wanted to go somewhere that was not too formal, where we could chat and relax and Hickory's delivered on that part. The restaurant is located on the banks of the River Dee and really has a great view. We were shown to our table and the service was slick. My wife and I ordered pulled pork, which was served with fries, bbq beans and coleslaw and it was to die for. Our friend ordered a full rack of ribs, again delicious.

The sweet menu is small but with enough on it. The cheesecake was ok, and the cookies with a scoop of ice cream (rather than a glass of milk) were warm, soft and well flavoured.

With drinks on top our bill was good value. This place is great for families and for an informal eat with friends. Good job well done!!

“good food but bit pricey”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

came here for a meal with my girl friend and to be fair the food is amazing and good sized portions, the xxxl burger is my favourite and anything with pulled pork is amazing, is a little pricey as our bill came to £28.30 for 2 meals and 2 soft drinks, as I gave the waiter £40 I was expecting my change which never came, I had to ask the waiter after 10 minutes for my change as he was then out side washing tables, the food was good but not worth that much as a tip!!!

“Gluten free food”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

My husband and I visited this restaurant and were really pleased that they had a menu specifically for people who required a gluten free meal. The service was very good and we did not wait very long at all to be served. I will agree with one of the other reviewers and say that some of the staff looked a little bit miserable, but on the whole it was a nice experience.

“Traveled from Wolverhampton not worth the trip”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

Been to a few smoke houses. And was expecting this to be ace. Disappointed I would say. All the staff apart from the pleasant meet and greet lady outside was miserable and looked like they didn't really want to be there. The food was average I tried a friends ribs they tasted like water no flavour what so ever dull I had the pulled pork may as well be chunked pork there was huge chunks with fat and all sorts not how you would expect pulled pork smoked for many hours. The burnt end bites were nice tho and the BBQ sauce with hot links was ok too.
The decoration is really nice and looks great. Shame the food doesn't really match.

“Gut busting burgers & awesome beer”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

We were in Chester for the weekend and had tried to get a table reservation here for the Saturday evening. However it was fully booked. Determined not to miss out on this American experience that everyone is raving about we instead called in for a late lunch around 3pm. We were seated outside straight away on a table overlooking the river. The waitress was friendly and prompt. Both myself and my partner ordered the burger - WOW! Generous portions and tasted wonderful. Cooked to perfection. We were too stuffed to even contemplate dessert although the selection did look enticing. My partner loves his beer/lager and was thrilled to be able to order a pint of Brooklyn on draft. Somewhat pricey at £4.50 however he declared it the best pint he'd had whilst in Chester. Overall an excellent restaurant. Great atmosphere and what impressed me the most was that despite the busyness the service was second to none. Shame we don't live near enough to make a repeat visit.
