This is one of the only surviving complete Roman walls in the country running the full circumference of the original old city. The scenery changes dramatically as you follow the course from canals with the Welsh foothills on the horizon, the river Dee with it's frothy rapids, Chester cathedral and the famous clock towering about the Eastgate entrance to the city. No visit to Chester is complete without walking some, if not all of the city wall and locals use it is a short cut to navigate other parts of the city. Maintaining the 2000 year old wall is an on going problem meaning walkers may have to leave the wall and rejoin once more after a few meters when construction work is taking place. Sadly a large part of the wall recently collapsed due to mindless and damaging construction nearby. Hopefully this will be fixed soon and the beautiful walls will continue to be maintained.

We loved walking along these walls. Some of the towers still stand, though I don't think you can climb to the top. Very good looking.

We were inChester for Christmas and an organised walking tour had been arranged which included part of the city walls around by the cathedral, we found it interesting with plenty to see, and helpful information posts trying to add context and local information to the visitor.
