Actually, quite a lot of Roman history, and some Civil War history too. Chester is one of the few surviving walled cities in Europe, and the walk round the walls is a fascinating way to see the city. From the time of the Roman occupation, Chester has enjoyed a prominent role, and has known its share of warfare in different forms until fairly recently. As you walk around the walls, it does not take much imagination to conjure up the important part they played in keeping out potential marauders such as the Welsh. Judging by the proliferation of Welsh accents in the city, they are not now doing such a good job. Back to the walls: the views are magnificent, with many interesting towers including the King Charles Tower. A very good experience all round.

Wonderfully preserved mediaeval walls with Roman interspertions. Easily accessible to circumnavigate in approx 90mins staedy pace great views of Cathedral, River Dee and Chester Race course. Well worth a promenade after breakfast.

You need to be fairly fit and healthy to do this walk, not great for disabled access, the views are a little disappointing but great for if you only have a few hours stay and you want to soak up Chester's history in a short amount of time.

Historic site and great views of the town centre and cathedral. A must for keen photographers. Good access for the elderly and disabled.

Or so we were told, a good way to look around the city, see the river, racecourse and canal and stop for a cuppa along the way.
