Pushing the boundaries a little bit, using incredibly well sourced local produce. Delicious! And don't miss the deli, it's a little gem.

“Breakfast at Joseph Benjamin”
Reviewed October 12, 2012

Breakfast was excellent but overpriced, horrifically overpriced. A fairly simple English breakfast of modest proportions with coffee at £11+ each for two is just a little over the top. Whilst at the other end of the scale on quality it is possible to buy the same meal for under £3 at many other cafes in the town centre. Excellent quality fare but far too expensive, Check out other prices locally that balance quality and value for money.

“Must try harder”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

We took an Amercian work colleague for a treat the other night to JB's. The place was dead for the first 30 mins and then a group of noisy office workers landed. The food was average to poor - beware the skate which is unedible and go to KFC if you want chicken. Wine is way overpriced.
Won't go again in a hurry.

“A very pleasant, easy going restaurant”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

We booked an early sitting on a Saturday evening. Service was attentive without being over the top. It’s an interesting menu, guinea fowl and skate wing along side more traditional sausage & mash and chicken & chips (done very well I must say!). I had the guinea fowl which was excellent. Good portion size. The restaurant is well laid out, we had a table for four and found there to be plenty of space between tables. A good bottle of 2010 Rioja and a large Armagnac…….just the job!

“If you're gonna charge that much you have to deliver!”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Been dying to try this place based it's reviews & rating amongst chesters competition but it left me feeling angry & ripped off.

There was 2 menus to choose from (Sunday) , the normal lunch offerings & 2 or 3 course lunch special. Don't know exactly what was special about it as the starters were a choice of 2 & the main, errrrr , well a choice of 1 which was roast chicken. No lamb, pork or the traditional British classic of roast beef. Very, very strange & the other menu wasn't too inspiring either. My partner & i sort of looked at each other as if to say what the **** & probably would have done if the neighbouring tables weren't on our laps! In truth we wanted to leave but i wanted to give it a chance. Before i get to the main issues the room temperature was ridiculously warm & the chairs were those awful hard wooden cheap type with no padding. My circulation & joints are just about recovering after the 90 minutes of torture we endured.

Starters fine as can't really get mussels & soup wrong £12 for the 2 but it was the mains that stole the show. Partners skate was tasteless, the mish mash of octopus, chorizo & sliced potatoes looked hideous & didn't compliment each other at all. A very poor dish badly seasoned. My £18 veal was just a piece of tender meat sat on a bed of mash with mushrooms & a pleasant sauce which was supposed to be red wine jus but there was no evidence of the wine( looking at the quality & presentation of both dishes I'd say the chef must have consumed the missing red wine). Even the wine list is vastly overpriced & i eventually chose a Soave for £20 which for the price you would expect to be quotable. On the contrary, it was on a par with stowells. I noticed cloudy bay Sauvignon blanc was available at i think £37 a bottle. I can get this for £15 so a Mark up of at least £22 for unscrewing a top...scandalous. There was no check with us to see if food was ok either. I think this place thinks it's something special but it falls short in too many areas for me. Soooo many better places in Chester. Places are always judged on providing value for money & JB fails. In summary, very uncomfortable seating, far too hot in dining room, very uninspiring quite boring menu, wine list extortionate & most importantly vastly overpriced ordinary food i could easily achieve for half the price in the city
