Premier Inn Chester City Centre Hotel

Reviewed October 12, 2013

Stayed here 2 nights in mid october as a short break midweek to tour around Chester. Although check-in wasn't until 2pm, I arrived just before 12 and the reception staff were more than happy to hold my large bag to avoid taking it around the city centre.
On check-in I was informed about the meal deal, where I could book a table in the restaurant, 3 courses, which would also include breakfast. In light of the location of the hotel, and proximity to breakfast alternatives I declined. It would also appear that there is a reduced selection of meal options available for the meal deal.
The room I was allocated was on the lower ground floor, accessible by lift and stairs, and looked into the limited carpark area. Given some of the reviews on trip advisor, I was glad I was not facing into the road! The room still managed to let in some natural light despite the view, and was well maintained and spacious for my needs. There were ample towels, and pillows, and the fixtures and fittings were to a high standard. The freeview TV was mounted on an adjustable bracket which meant you could watch TV from the small desk/chair or the small armchair provided without needing to be on the bed. Tea and Coffee facilities were restocked the next morning, and I was given fresh towels despite being willing to save them for my 2nd night.
There was a small water like stain on the carpet in the desk area, but I didn't notice this until the first morning and it really was of no consequence. I found that after a biting wind and showers during the day, the A/C unit was a welcome feature which kept the room warm and cosy. I am not sure if comfort levels could be maintained as easily during hot weather, as my window didn't open and am not sure if rooms not on the ground floor would have windows that allowed natural air circulation or not.
There were well stocked vending machines at reception, and a ben and jerry's ice cream machine. The bar and restaurant area looked well presented, but during busy periods or weekends it did not look like it would be able to handle the pressures of a full hotel and subsequent demand.
The hotel itself is situated just 5 minutes walk from the station and 5 minutes walk from the town centre, accessible by a well lit subway - however this did contain a homeless person on more than one occasion. There is inadequate car parking for the size of the hotel. This is to perhaps be expected given its city centre location however many people seemed unaware of this on arrival. There are however other hotels in the chain which do have parking provision and are only a short park and ride journey away from the city centre.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, and whilst not having to call on them for any specific help beyond custody of my bags pre-arrival and post-departure whilst I explored Chester I felt they were friendly and approachable at all times. A nice touch was wall mounted soap and shower gels to the shower and sink area of the bathroom. I presume this is the same for larger rooms with a bath and a shower. There was ample storage for clothes (bag went easily under the desk and bed if needed) and coat hooks by the door. Due to the AC unit, the doorway area was lacking in light by the only full length mirror in the room but this was workable.
Given its location and the facilities on offer I would visit again. A very comfortable and relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Room on lower ground floor was quiet as facing into carpark. Other rooms on this level face side str...

upon arrival at this hotel, the receptionist, Marie, kindly came out to our car and carried both our suitcases into the hotel reception, after which she then carried the cases to the lift, this hotel does not offer reserved car parking but, due to the fact that I'm semi-disabled she kindly made sure I had a car space. The room was clean and comfortable & the bar and restaurant value for money, but the main point of my wife and I's stay, was the continued effort by Marie to make our 2 days enjoyable and pleasant, she also informed us of Chester's attractions, restaurants local market's etc, a great experience, thus we will certainly return to this hotel, if only for Marie's hospitality.

Room Tip: the hotel in general was extremely quiet

Close to station and city centre. Nice helpful staff. Cheaper continental option for breakfast. Nice evening meal, reasonably priced including drinks. No car park but street parking outside unrestricted 6pm-8am and all day Sundays. Bit of drunken noise from outside on the Saturday night but not too late. Comfortable room & bed.

Stayed for the Chester Marathon and the staff could not have been more helpful - adapting their usual schedule to the runners, porridge at the ready for breakfast and a good quiet night's sleep (surprising for a city Premier Inn)

Hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the station and about 5-10 minutes walk into town.
It's clean and it has all you need for a few nights away.
It's also quite secure as your room key is required to open several doors.
Good shower, decent bed and simple & clean rooms - and everything was in working order.
Reception can be a bit busy, especially at peak check-in times but other than that, no complaints.

My partner and I stayed at the hotel on Friday night and this was a second trip to this property in 2013. The first time we stayed we found all of the usual Premier Inn touches in place, such as a clean and tidy room, a friendly welcome and a convenient location, but our stay was spoiled a little by being given a room that was very close to the lift on the third floor. In the morning, in particularly, the noise of the lift operating was a clear distraction if you were in that room (330, I think). However when we wanted to return to Chester we didn't think twice about booking in at the same hotel and we were once again presented with a clean and tidy room, comfortable public areas and helpful staff - I would particularly add that the ladies who served breakfast could not have been more helpful and Cassie in particular was a credit to the team. However once again the room was the biggest let down, this time we were allocated room 302 which was small by the usual Premier Inn standards. This was particularly apparent when you had a shower. To illustrate, the room dimensions had required the room to be fitted with a bathroom door that had been hung to open outwards and did not have a bath due to space restrictions. Having a shower therefore had a significant impact on the temperature of the room. Only at this point do you realise that the window does not open and the air con just tells you that 17 degrees is attainable whilst seeming to do very little else. This led to the strange situation of having to go out into the corridor outside to cool down enough to be able to dress comfortably for your day. This clearly needs some attention and it seems such a shame that on both occasions the hard work of the team has been let down by the design of the accommodation. In addition the hotel really does need to make it so that you can book a car parking space - being told that you can't and its first come first served when you do phone up in advance seems a strange way to operate when travellers may be visiting from some distance away.

So in advising others it is a good hotel, it is an ideal location and the team have always been excellent but get there early and check your room thoroughly when you arrive as a hot room or a noisy lift can make a great nights sleep a little more of a struggle than you would like.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the lifts and avoid the third floor, particularly if all the windows are sealed shu...
