Having eaten here a few years ago and found it somewhat lacklustre I was intrigued to see what had changed. The answer is almost everything! The venue is still uniquely quirky which is the thing I'd always enjoyed about Oddfellows, but now the things that I wasn't so keen on have been resolved this has become somewhere that we will return to each time we are back in Chester. The service was basically as good as at The Grosvenor with polite attentive staff who know their stuff. The 'secret garden' area at the back is now the place I always wanted it to be, with lovely little nooks of private seating, lots of colourful plants and unusual decorative items which provide plenty of interesting things to look at if you're waiting for someone to arrive!
I can remember the exact menu descriptions, but I had the Gressingham duck starter which was a perfect size and really tasty, followed by the cod which I'd like to go and have again today. It was beautifully presented and perfectly cooked and was large enough to satisfy my big appetite!
The menu is very good and I was tempted by most options. It also had some nice summery options which I've found many places in the UK haven't offered (which I've been told is probably due to the less than summery weather this year!)
Wine was also excellent, we opted for the one recommended to us and we couldn't fault it.
Prices are about average for Chester, perhaps a little higher than some bars ad restaurants but well worth it for the quality of cuisine, service and the unusual surroundings.
I would recommend this place to family & friends without hesitation and look forward to returning.
