Description: Stocks is a traditional granite farmhouse dating from 1741, renovated & refurbished in 2010 and we now proud to provide quiet luxury at the heart of Sark. Great quality food lies at the heart of our hospitality philosophy. We pride ourselves on producing good food using the freshest local ingredients wherever possible. Local suppliers grow or harvest only small quantities of fresh produce on a non-intensive and sustainable basis. We are grateful for their dedication, commitment and passion, and for providing us with an excellent variety of Sark Fresh quality produce depending upon the season. ‘We source fresh local produce before we import anything’. We define ‘Sark local’ as being sourced from within a 5-mile radius of the hotel, inlcuding the sea! Stocks has established Sark’s first ever market garden based on the principles of Permaculture providing an oasis of superbly fresh, organic, local garden produce, only 250 metres from the kitcehn door.

We dined on the poolside patio as a group of 21 to celebrate a special birthday. The food and service was perfect and we thought the meal was well priced. The restaurant also has an extensive and interesting wine list. Since we were fortunate with the weather, the children were able to enjoy the pool. The hotel surroundings are immaculate.

If you need to celebrate a special occasion or want to go upmarket, this is the place to be. With a well stock bar, extensive wine list, local gin, fully trained staff; this establishment is the place to be. The owner is always around double-checking that the highest standards are maintained an only the fresh, seasonal local products are used.
I like the atmosphere and relaxing environment as well as delicious food.

I feel compelled to defend my wife's review of Stocks restaurant, on this occasion three of the five tables sent meals back to the kitchen, two differing dishes were acknowledged to be "off" - that's not "challenging dining", that's food that has passed its healthy margin and started to turn. Furthermore, as accepted by the duty manager, the gnocchi dish had badly clashing flavours that made the dish not just challenging, but almost inedible.

A burnt honeycomb rounded off a rather unsatisfactory evening.

To correct the General manager's comments It was me that spoke to the manager not my wife, and the dishes were not completely removed from the bill.

As someone who grew up in the catering trade I realise the ups and downs of the business but as stated at the time, I felt that there was a fundamental issue in the kitchen that night. No chef will allow food that is clearly 'off' to be served, tasting dishes is a key component of the cooking process..

Further, to attempt to mask food that is rotten by suggesting that some dishes challenge the palate is almost criminal. We are sophisticated diners with many visits to starred restaurants, and I can assure you that had any of the diners actually swallowed the offending dishes, it would not have been the palate that would have been challenged but the digestion too! Off food is recognisably off, not challenging!

Lastly, as we went to leave another diner stopped us to suggest that this was their third day as guests, and had not yet found a meal that was up to standard (PS I am being generous in my reinterpretation of the actual words used)

The positives: Excellent service at the bar and interior restaurant. Diplomatic apologies and genuine concern from manager regarding recent lack of quality of food. The negatives: Very poor quality food in three out of six dishes which manager agreed should not have been served, especially as one of the elements was deemed rancid. Rumoured chronic kitchen staffing issues. Note: Two other tables sent back various dishes on same night including a fish course that smelt 'off' from the other side of the restaurant. Conclusion: A Gordon Ramsay-style makeover is urgently needed if this fine hotel is to live up to its former excellent reputation.

We are disappointed to receive this review following a detailed conversation that we had with this customer before she left the restaurant.
We personally and profusely apologised about the unusual and unfortunate set of circumstances that this table, and one other, encountered on the evening that they dined with us. The offending dishes were immediately removed from their respective bills, and our apologies were offered unreservedly.
Furthermore, we apologised that such circumstances can occur even in the most well-regulated restaurants and the lady seemed to understand and appreciate our errors and omissions. We have always endeavoured to offer interesting and slightly unusual dishes on our evening menus, and occasionally in our desire to push creative boundaries we very occasionally fall short of expectations. Dishes such as soused local fish fillets, faggots made from Sark lamb offal and wing of local skate can be challenging to certain palates particularly if the flavours, textures or recipes are unusual or alien.
Unsubstantiated rumours in hospitality can be rife and often damaging, however we can categorically confirm that “rumours of chronic kitchen staffing issues” are simply just not true. The core of our kitchen brigade has been working with us for over 3 years. We are currently recruiting for just one vacancy; a summer pastry cook.
We wish to assure this reviewer and all other customers that our passion and commitment to provide the best possible dining experience and to exceed customer expectations wherever and whenever possible have not, and will not, change.

I was informed that this was an excellent place to eat but oh how wrong could that be. I like a medium to rare steak but not a burger. My burger was bleeding. I asked them to cook it more but it took so long I just cancelled the order. To top it off it was actually the girl behind the bar that eventually came to apologise and not the catering side. My father had the fish and when he cut it open it was soaked in oil. This is not a good place to eat. You are better off at a cheap greasy cafe. I do not recommend this place at all.

We are disappointed to receive this review and it is important, as ever, to be aware of all the facts and the truth.
This reviewer is the mother of a girl who works for one of our competitors. Her daughter has dined in our Bistro restaurant on several occasions with her friend who also works at the same hotel. They know all our staff and they know very well that the ‘girl behind the bar’ is our restaurant supervisor, the lady who took their order and who dealt with her complaint.
Our beef burgers are made of 100% pure fresh beef and they are all cooked to order. The reviewers beef burger was marginally pink, and certainly not ‘bleeding’. We apologised immediately and offered to cook a new beef burger. We do not attempt to re-cook meat that has already been served. The new beef burger took precisely 9 minutes to cook, but the reviewer was not prepared to wait. We removed the beef burger from her bill, and she was given a complimentary dessert as a further apology. The reviewer makes no mention of this.
Our fish & chips are all freshly prepared & cooked to order, and we serve hundreds of portions a week. This reviewer had 3 opportunities to raise a complaint directly with our service staff. However, she made no comment and, indeed, they ate all their fish & chips, and completely cleared the plate. Once again, the reviewer makes no mention of this.
We endeavour to deal with all genuine comments immediately, openly and directly on the day, and certainly before a customer leaves the restaurant. All tables are checked on at least 3 separate occasions and guests are actively encouraged for their feedback. We categorically do not accept the accusation that we do not care about the quality of our food or the level of personal care and customer service that we offer.
Our young staff are particularly offended by this review because they personally know the daughter of the reviewer and her friend, having served them on various occasions.
Inaccurate, inappropriate, suspicious and anonymous reviews such as this do nothing for the reputation of TripAdvisor.
