“A great place in The Fens”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

Enjoyed a lovely couple of nights at The Anchor which is situated in the middle of the fens a few miles from Ely, the staff were extremely helpful and the food was amazing, we didn't have the car with us which was slightly limiting as there aren't lots of taxis but there is good walking around the area
The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable although the plumbing was a little noisy - perhaps just a quirk of a 350 year old building
One thing I would say though is that this is very much a restaurant with rooms rather than a pub, so therefore there isn't a bar or anywhere to relax in when you dont want to be in your room - I was sort of expecting a cosy local from the website, plus the food isn't cheap so if you are there for more than a day or two do factor this into your final bill as there aren't many other options nearby

Great roast Sunday lunch in a relaxed, riverside location less than 10 miles from Ely. Wide menu choice, with good service at a reasonable price in an intimate setting.

We look forward to coming back again.

I have eaten here many times over the past few years and have always come away completely satisfied. The menu doesn't change a lot but all the options are good. The service is always attentive but you are not rushed and can linger over your meal as long as you like. I took my son and his American girlfriend there last year and she was desperate to try the sticky toffee pudding as she had never had it before. She was delighted and I think it is one of the best I have ever had. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the food. Fully recommended.

Our meal was interesting, well cooked with seasonal veg and tasty .
My starter was well cooked, although I'm still not sure about coconut with scallops.
We each had different main courses all of which were interesting and delicious
All in all an excellent meal, we came away well satisfied but not stuffed
I would recommend this restaurant

My husband and I had a late BB break here at the weekend. Lovely room and friendly attentive staff. Stayed here just over a year ago and will definitely be staying again. The food at both dinner and breakfast was superb with some unusual alternatives on both menus. Lovely location overlooking the fens, Old Bedford river and hundred foot drain. Book direct for best option including breakfast. Some low old beams so if you are very tall watch your head!

Room Tip: We had room 1 with good view over the water and huge double bed!

My husband and I went for lunch with our two daughters friday midday. Although we were the first in we enjoyed it so much we were the last out! It was so nice we had a 3 course lunch!
The food excellent and the service was lovely. Although slightly more expensive it was worth it. Two of us had steaks which were lovely and cooked exactly as we had requested. Starters and pudding were also delicious. Looking forward to our next visit.

Back to the Anchor, Sutton Gault, for the umpteenth time in about ten years, after a gap. What did we want? A really good meal: a quiet but beautiful retreat..a comfortable room.

And we found all three. The food is astonishingly consistent, and as good as you can get. The staff are very friendly, and service excellent. The rooms slope intriguingly in all directions. The bed was comfortable and enormous: the setting peaceful.

So - recent reviewers - it's not flashily decorated, and the food costs real money: but you get what you pay for, the food is still outstanding, and this place is brilliant.

Every time I arrive at the Anchor I know why it's so well worth coming deep into the fens.

Room Tip: The suites give you room to relax
