The real test of a great restaurant is not what service you get when the Head Chef is in residence but the service you get when they are not.
Daniel Clifford was gracing the cameras of the Great British Menu the night myself and my friend turned up to enjoy the experience of the top restaurant in Cambridge.
I need not have worried as Daniels' more than able deputy Dan Gill was on the pass. I reckon Dan will be a name we will hear a lot more of.
Everything from the welcome, to the food, to the wine, to the service, to the attention to detail, to the setting and to the real tangible friendliness of the staff were first class.
Some real highlights for me were the celery, goats cheese and horseradish starter (I don't even like goats cheese), the mushroom tortellini, the crispy hens egg with Jerusalem artichoke, smoked duck and truffle and the braised beef cheek main was quite superb.
The wine selection was great especially the Esk Valley, Pinot from New Zealand, quite delicious.
I would recommend Midsummer House unreservedly.
Go and enjoy one of the best meals you will ever have.
