“Style over substance”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

We passed by this cafe and thought it looked decent and was quite popular. Our first encounter was with a sneery barista, which I can tolerate if their coffee cashes the cheque their sneer writes, but sadly in this case it did not, coffee would be 5/10. I think we caught them at crossover, they appeared very disorganised, we had to wait over 10 minutes to have our order taken, and then after a decent enough croissant we thought we might have tried the cakes, but given that no one came back to clear plates or to ask if we would like anything else, we decided not to part with anymore money. We overheard two other tables complain about the wait and the need to be somewhere else. Would not go back, which is a shame as someone has put a lot of care into the restaurant design itself.

“Delicious cakes, wish we could have eaten more!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Cheerful and friendly staff offering good service. We ordered scone with cream and jam and coffee and I ordered coffee choux bun with hot chocolate. my hot chocolate got cold as we waited some time for the cakes so they provided me with a freshly made one. the coffee icing on the choux bun was delicious. the sandwiches looked mouth watering but we weren't hungry enough - next time!

“Wonderful thoughtful food”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Every time we are in Cambridge we have to go to Fitzbillies for a Chelsea bun. This visit, we were looking for somewhere for dinner, so went along not quite knowing what to expect. It was wonderful to eat such delicious, well thought out food. Every course was a delight. The combinations of flavour, texture and taste were far better than places that charge twice or three times the price. Enjoyed every mouthful and will definitely be back for more!

“A bit of a let down......”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

Fitzbillies is a very well-known café, but apparently it has had a bit of a makeover in recent times; we were disappointed that it was a modern café with an old-fashioned frontage - we would have liked the interior to echo the appearance fromoutside. We had a cream tea which was quite pricey, but didn't live up to expectations; the Pitkin Guide boasts that their Chelsea Buns are sent to the four corners of the world regularly, but the white (no wholemeal option!) scone was of a standard which can be obtained cheaply in any baker or supermarket. The clotted cream seemed to have just come out of a freezer and was hard to spread, but this may have been made necessary by the extremely hot weather.

“A trip down memory lane with memorable Chelsea buns”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

I used to buy cakes at Fitzbillies in the mid 1960s and returned, rather tired and hungry, early one afternoon in July nearly fifty years later. I sat at a communal table and enjoyed a large pot of excellent tea, a quiche-like tartlet with salad and, indulgently, a Chelsea bun for old times' sake. It was a wonderfully relaxing interlude and a perfect light meal. The trip down memory lane didn't disappoint and Fitzbillies remains a destination of choice for those looking for cakes or a light meal in the center of Cambridge.
