“It's the little touches that are missing”

Good things: friendly staff, although could have better training. Lovely beds, sheets, pillows. Very interesting building and in an ideal spot for exploring Cambridge - literally across the road from the Fitzwilliam Museum if you are interested in art. Also very good breakfast.

Disappointing things: no place in bedroom or shower room for putting toiletries or make-up - the basin was fixed to wall with no surrounding for "stuff". When in shower (which was great) nowhere to hang towel or dressing gown. No proper dressing table or mirror. Bedside lighting commendable for energy saving but impossible to read by! Food at dinner was disappointing as was the service apart from the young female sommelier who knew her stuff.

My wife and I stayed here on a special rate we found in a magazine and we thought we would give it a try. We were so glad we did. On arrival we had pre booked be valet parking for £18 and the porter took the car away for us. It is parked very close by in an underground car park so we were told.

The checkin staff were very friendly and showed us up to our room which was a nice touch. The room we had I presume must have been one of the standard rooms but it was a great size and furnished really nicely. Huge great bed, nice bath and shower and all the usual amenities you would expect. There is a minibar and something the simple that impressed me was providing fresh milk for the tea tray and not those horrible UHT pouches.

In the evening (which was a Saturday) we checked out the bar which is located in the cellar. Loads of brickwork and alcoves with cosy sofas and seating. Great place to enjoy a drink or two. It was heaving though and you really need to be in there by 7 to get a seat. Drinks are pricey but do you expect anything else? The only criticism I had the hotel for our whole stay was the lack of service in the bar. We had been in the bar almost 30minutes before we go our first drink.

We didn't dine in the restaurant in the evening for dinner or breakfast but on Sunday the hotel offer a Sunday brunch deal. £19.95 for 4 courses and my god it is fantastic quality and fantastic value. Don't eat breakfast if you go for this. Soup followed my a French market table of prawns, salmon, pâté, salami, breads, salad, olives. Then a huge roast dinner or one of the other choices available. And if you even have room there is also a pudding. We live an hour away but I would drive to cambridge just to go for that deal again.

The hotel has a lovely lounge area as well on the ground floor which is quiet and has board games and books to read.

We were very impressed with this hotel and wouldn't have any hesitations in recommending it. For those of you thinking £18 is a lot for parking - it is a snip in comparison to the other car parks in the city centre and you also have the ease of just pulling up outside the front door. We were allowed to leave the car in there well over 24 hours so don't worry about then kicking you out after a certain time.

We had a highly enjoyable & delicious meal at Hotel Du Vin. Le Brunch on a Sunday is incredible value for money and both the food & service were excellent. The setting and decor is really lovely and the location is ideal for a leisurely walk through Cambridge. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. Looking forward to going again very soon!

Stayed for a birthday celebration, on a room rate that included a three course a la carte meal and breakfast for two. Used valet parking which was great for £18. Service from the moment we arrived till we left was fantastic! Food in the brasserie was gorgeous as was the breakfast! Can recommend the cocktails in the cellar bar too! Grand arcade is about a 10 min walk. Upgraded to a suite which was worth the extra £40, though the air con wasn't up to much! Make sure you book...We will definitely be back!

We booked dinner, B&B for our family party as a pre-Christmas celebration and had a wonderful time. The real highlights were the food and service at dinner and the outstanding service in the bar before and after dinner. We were made to feel very welcome and well looked after and can't praise the bar staff highly enough. The decor and ambiance are great - a lovely setting for a celebratory evening. The only downsides were: 1. The welcome at reception on arrival - cool and unfriendly. 2. The size and quality of our room. Very small and stuffy, rotting wood around the bath, a little noisy by the bar. 3. The service and food at breakfast. The waitress was resistant to us moving tables so that we could sit together as a party, even though very few other tables were occupied. Our food took a long time to arrive and when it did the bacon was barely cooked and the black pudding was cold. Overall, the prices are steep and we did feel that the quality of the bedrooms is very oversold on the website. However, we did have a really lovely, special evening and we would visit again.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the road and the bar if you want to avoid noise.

Ate in Bistro. Despite booking a table at a specific time and arriving at the allotted time, ushered into dingy subterranean pastiche of a bar, clearly a ploy to sell some overpriced drinks. Eventually shown to our table, staff very subservient in a Uriah Heap sort of way.
Starters were average in quality but hideously over priced, as were the main courses. Bought wine by the glass (only one of us is a wine drinker), when the bill arrived I thought I had bought a case.
Skipped pudding and coffee and beat a hasty retreat, now typing this with a decidedly queasy stomach.
There a many better places to eat in Cambridge. Avoid Hotel Du Vin.
