“Possibly the worst place in Cambridge”
Review of Benet's Cafe

Benet's Cafe
Ranked #35 of 48 Coffee & Tea in Cambridge

This cafe fails on many levels. First and perhaps the most severe is the service: the waiter was astonishingly rude and will eject you from the premises if you've stayed there for more than 30 minutes. In addition, they will display Tea Pigs tea, but will actually just give you any old tea if you ask for Breakfast tea or earl grey.

Secondly, the food was mediocre, but overpriced for what it was.

Thirdly, there atmosphere was completely hollow - probably because the locals have learnt to avoid it.

I visited Benet's this morning, 21st July and waiting 45 minutes for a coffee and three other drinks. Not too excessive you would imagine. However, when I simply asked when the drinks would come, a couple of the staff were very apologetic, but unfortunately one male member of staff attempted to justify his inability to do his job. When questioned further to explain, it was clear I had reached the limit of his capacity so he turned his back, duly demonstrating his incompetence and embarrassing his colleagues. An embarrassment to his boss as well as personally incompetent. Poor service is one thing, but an unpolished, uncouth and churlish employee is quite another

Quite honestly the best coffee in Cambridge with probably one of the most breathtaking close looming architectural views anywhere. Tea Pigs are a bonus as most similar establishments resort to an inferior product, Lemon and Ginger for me. Paninis and crepes are delicious and extraordinaryly well filled. The young team and proprietors who work here are without fail polite and helpful and tolerate so much rude and inappropriate behaviour from customers, they are always gracious and patient unlike some of their customers, take the ones who have the nerve and bad manners to bring their own food or even a coffee from nearby Caffe Nero or even Marky's to one of Benet's prized tables. A real mix of clients, students sweating or should I say perspiring, over dissertations, debates about Dawkins or Quantum Physics, single elderly ladies on a coach trip from the smoke, the odd celebrity, cosmopolitan crowds of tourists absorbing that view of King's College, handsome middle abe dapper chaps and grumbling about the price of wine in this town and one or two of the deafening buskers of limited appeal. So much can be taken in about academic and eccentric life in general on King's Parade, it has to deserve a tick in one's I Spy Book on a day out in the 'bridge. And my wife tells me the ice cream is MARVELLOUS .......and she should know. Characterful.

We had been to Benet's several times; the ice creams are good quality, but expensive. Recently we visited with a group of 8 and spent over £30 on ice cream. We were sitting in one of the tables outside the shop and after 35 min we were told to leave if we were not going to order anything else! Appalling service !!!

Imagine a beautiful June sunny day, having eaten your ice cream on Kings parade looking at the lovely Kings College chapel. The world seems good. OK, the icecream was expensive (~£24 for 10 scoops) but the view from the street is wonderful with the sun on your face. Suddenly, 40mins after arriving the proprietors assistant asks us to leave, or order something to eat/drink, acting on the request of his boss. We're obviously occupying his frontage and he wants some more customers. Curiously, we'd all lost our appetite and decided to leave, but appetite is a strange thing and sometimes never returns.
