We stayed at the Hotel Felix to get a night away for New Year's Eve. We booked our stay over the phone and chose one of the package deals, which included a three course dinner, room, and full breakfast.
First floor (#42). Clean, modern and well appointed, featuring heated floors and towel rack in the bathroom, large bathub and separate rainfall shower, comfortable King bed with four pillows (and extra available upon request), choice of teas, coffee and Cadbury hot chocolate and a decently sized flat screen TV. Overall room size was modest, but spacious washroom and smart placement of furniture made best use of the space available. Reasonably priced room service (GBP3.5 tray charge) and most meals available were in the range of GBP10. An unexpected surprise!
Front desk staff very friendly, efficient, and helpful. We never had to wait to be attended to. Settling the bill upon checkout was quick without any issues and they very kindly called a taxi for us, which arrived promptly.
Wait staff were polite and efficient. We noticed many of the staff from the New Year's Eve dinner service were again working at breakfast but yet they did not show any sign of being tired or suffering from any festivities which would be understandable - very commendable.
Having arrived in the early afternoon of the 31st, we first decided to treat ourselves to an Afternoon Tea. Two options with a variety of finger foods, desserts, and teas were available with a price of c. GBP14pp. We chose the traditional tea, which was served in the orangery with finger sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, jam, date squares, bakewell tart and something that was very much like a custard filled macaroon. It was as expected, though it was a treat to eat the warm scones.
The three course dinner -- Even though it was a set menu, the menu was given in a nicely bound booklet rather than only on a printed piece of paper. Despite the fixed menu the options were broad, e.g. celiac free (or made compatible), vegetarian, fish, and meat. Served promptly without feeling rushed. We were checked upon to make sure each course was satisfactory and we had enough to drink. At the end of the meal we each had tea and coffee, respectively, and were given a pot of tea and coffee each. Not sure if this is standard fare or a special due to the meal, but it was nice to be able to serve our own and have several refills as/when desired.
We both enjoyed the dinner and surprisingly, enjoyed the rabbit dish much more than the pork. Kudos to the chef.
Breakfast -- With our package we had access to both the continental buffet and hot breakfasts. If the room doesn't include either, it's about GBP10 for the buffet and a further charge for the hot breakfast, so if you like something warm suggested that you bundle it with your room when booking. A selection of what appeared to be fresh juices, water, cereals, musli, pastries, and both fruit and berry salads. Of the hot breakfasts, we chose the waffles with creme fraiche which was delicious - one could see it was scratch made - and the salmon with scrambled eggs which came in a decent portion. It was a nice meal, we were seated right by the window and enjoyed the sun, but it seemed like we were the first to arrive so our meal took longer than expected to be served. We didn't mind as we weren't in a rush, but perhaps after the previous evening's quick service we were expecting something akin (a gold standard had been set the night before!).
We chose this hotel knowing it was not in the city centre as we wanted to get away without being remote. The taxi fare is approx GBP10 to get into the far side of the city centre, but the walk is quite doable on a nice day. We noticed some reviews commenting that the restaurant fell short of their fine dining expectations because it is a multipurpose area for other meals, however we found this not to be the case. The art work was beautiful, the lighting and decor appropriate, the chairs comfortable, a nice touch was added by the roaring log fire, and in the morning new chairs were used to give the room a more casual, relaxed atmosphere.
We would definitely return if we stayed overnight in Cambridge and would recommend this hotel to any visiting the city.
