“Really good value considering location”
Reviewed May 10, 2012

The hotel is located just outside of central Cambridge (only just) and a taxi was cheap, but I think if we'd known our way around it would have been just about walkable. The rooms were clean and warm, with adjustable heating, and the facilities were all average or better. The fact that there was a parking space available with the room was invaluable, as it was nearly impossible to park anywhere else!

Saying that, the shower in our room was pretty crap, but that was more likely down to me not knowing how to work the unusual controls. It had poor pressure and was painfully hot, but worked at least and there were towels and soaps as usual.

We were offered milk for our rooms (for tea and coffee) at reception at the time of check in, which we accepted and was given to us in a thermos flask, however I was reluctant to use it the next morning as there were no fridges in the rooms. I'm sure this would have been fine though.

The breakfast was really nice, and there was a lot of choice and variety, including different cereals, juices, yoghurts and toast with jam/honey/marmalade/marmite etc, as well as cooked breakfasts. The staff were quite friendly in the dining area, and the food was cooked fresh and quickly. The dining area itself was smartly presented, and cleared away promptly when people had finished.

Me and my boyfriend booked a room here along with two of our friends. We paid the same for two double rooms, however by chance one of us had a four poster bed, a spacious room and a large toilet and shower room and the other had a normal double bed, and a tiny toilet and shower cupboard. I think we'd have felt like it was a lot better value for money had we not seen the other room, however there was nothing wrong with ours, and for a night it was ideal.

Most of all, at around £100 cheaper than all similar hotels in Cambridge, it was really good value and I'd stay again.

Room Tip: We had 4B and 6B which were both the same price, however 6B (I think!) had a four poster bed and a s...

Initial thought on arrival - small cramped hotel. Looks like a converted (or possibly still in use) retirement home. Staff seemed polite but not chatty and not welcoming. Decor is out dated and dingy. Facilities are esssentials. Two communal toilets for entire hotel which was dirty with broken toilet seat, toilet paper rail fell out of wall, and floor has lino which is uneven. Single shower, hidden on highest level, difficult to reach if you are not able bodied due to steepness of stairs. Shower was grimy. We did not end up using this as the prospect of picking up some unwanted infection seemed high. The rooms were small, and basic, each with their own musty smell. Cupboards were not secured to walls, beds were barely bigger than camper beds, and bed linen was used and poor quality. Carpets had cigarette/iron burns on them. Each room had a sink and mirror, temperature control was not possible with these. hot taps were boiling. Breakfast was sparse with limited options. Staff seemed efficient but completely unwelcoming.

This hotel should only really be visited as a last resort and for those on an extremely tight budget.

I meant to write a review after my visit and have unfortunately only gotten around to it now. I booked one of the double rooms with a 4 poster bed. It came with a bottle of bubbly and chocolates as well. Breakfast was included, parking was available and it was about 15 minutes walk into Cambridge. So for £85 for the night, I thought it was quite reasonable.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very tasty and freshly made (rather than a buffet).

All in all very happy with the stay and would go again.

This property is quite ok for a short stay in Cambridge. Neat and clean and with a very helpful and polite staff.
The building is quite old and that is evident in the rooms, however they are in a decent state.
The location is not the best, not really in the center, however as the city is not very big, you can get there after 30 minutes walk or by public transport.
Overall, a good place if you're not looking for anything fanzy and just need a place to sleep.

Decent parking space, friendly and helpful staff, good location, clean room, no problems with the internet access, breakfast... acceptable, could be a bit better, OK bathroom, very warm, and for Cambridge - very low price. Recommended!

I stayed here for one night in the single ensuite room. It was ok for a night, but I'd probably try somewhere else next time. The room was fairly small - as I expected for a single room, but my gripe was that it was a bit drab and could have used a fresh coat of paint and carpet without stains on. The bathroom was clean, but had an irritating shower curtain of the sort that that envelopes you as soon as you switch the shower on. The bathroom was pretty small and inevitably the whole thing got wet when you had a shower! The staff seemed friendly and were accommodating when I asked to check out an hour late.

I did happen to glimpse one of the double rooms which looked considerably nicer so I suspect I was unlucky with the single ensuite. I also visited friends staying at the Travelodge central which seemed nicer for probably a similar price. As for the location, its a pleasant area near the river, about 15mins walk to the town centre and on the Citi 2 bus route. If you're looking for relatively cheap accommodation you won't it much closer to the centre - although I'd probably opt for something on the same side of town as the station as a preference.
