“for an afternoon break”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

village is 15 min. away from cambridge by bus. i guess it's always too crowded or we went there at the closing time (17.00) when the queu was long. still we had cakes and tea from the tea garden and it was a lovely time under trees. also next to the tea garden there is a little meadow by a little river to relax and have enjoyable time.
the village is small but lovely, too. 1 hour is more than enough for the whole trip.

“best in the mornings”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Dont drive, but walk from Newnham along the water meadows, about 20mins and beatiful views. Alternatively punt from scudamores by the doubleree hilton in central cambridge.(upstream , colleges downstream).
Early morning the place is quiet and the walk from Newnham peaceful.
If you have kids, the Red Lion has a good play garden, if you don't have kids avoid the place.
The blue ball on Granchester road is a small, relaxing pub and a good line in Blues music. Real ale and authentic. Green Man has a nice garden.
The Tea Orchard is overwhelmingly the focal attraction. Best again early morning, and gets horrifically congested at the w/e's when sunny. Theres a nice walk down to the river to sit from here, and swimming is popular, clean and safe.
Take a walk to Byrons pool as you head back toward Trumpington, the entrance set beside a little row of cottages on the right as you drive over the bridge. Nice place to picnic, take a canoe, or fish, and ideal for a dog walk.
Parking is bad in Granchester though in the summer a field is available, but costly. Bike or walk, you have been warned....
