“Pleasant enough, but over-priced.”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed in a new room. It was small, perfectly formed, but also utterly lacking in character. It simply felt like a typical mid-range business hotel anywhere in the country. We weren't able to secure a bed and breakfast rate, and no adequate explanation was given as to why we had to go out for breakfast (we ended up in a bizarre, dingy 'Spoons in a converted cinema a few doors down). The porters are a credit to Downing: delightful, funny, and helpful, and by far the best feature of our stay.

“Lino coming away from wall....”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

The college itself was beautiful. We had a room overlooking the car park which didn't help. The room was not upto the required standard for the amount we paid. The lino was hanging off the wall in the bathroom. The lighting wasn't right - no bedside lights. It certainly wasn't worth £80 for 1 night.

“wedding reception”
Reviewed April 5, 2012

Our son had his wedding reception in the beautiful building. The gardens were superb - wedding enjoyed by everyone - at least those who could remember it!

“A slice of Narnia”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

Downing College is a gem set just a little walk from the Grand Arcade shopping area. It is vastly overlooked since it is not a huge, world-famous attraction like some of its big brothers and sisters elsewhere in the city.

Great things about Downing: it is free to look around, it is one of the only colleges that has a big area of grass that you can walk on (or sit, or picnic, or read ...), as soon as you walk through the gates off the busy street you can barely hear the noise of the city and the traffic, and it represents some of the most beautiful Georgian architecture.

In the winter this college looks like it has been plucked from the pages of a C.S. Lewis book. My friends and I always comment, year on year, that it looks just like something you'd find through the back of an old wardrobe.
