Twenty three pounds was a tiny price to pay for a room. Granted, the room was small, but it was a perfectly clean and comfortable base for a part leisure, part study trip to Cambridge. Having wifi in the room was definitely a bonus. I kept to the breakfast of fresh fruit, yoghurt and muesli which set me up for the day. In all, this would have been just a decent, functional base for a short trip to Cambridge, but the engaging warmth of the hosts made it that bit more special.

  • Liked — The hosts, the value, the decent comfort
  • Disliked — The decor isn't to my taste but seen as I shut my eyes when I'm sleeping...

I enjoyed a very comfortable stay at Carlton Lodge, and found the owners to be helpful and friendly hosts. (Also it is not far to walk into the centre of Cambridge from there.)

Situated in nice, quiet area near to centre of Cambridge. Very nice, kind, helpful personnel. Well kept and clean. The rooms I got (one for me and another for my parents) had toilets and shower,s new and clean with towels provided.
Full breakfast included consists of a glass of orange juice, choice of various types of cereal, fresh fruit, grapefruit and yoghurt, with ham, turkey eggs, croissant, tea or coffee and toast. Much of this was 'organic'.
In short it was a simple, cheap and comfortable place.

Although the owners of the Carlton lodge are very friendly, this seemed almost an insult when my husband and I were presented with this dark, smelly and dirty B&B.

In the room there were cobwebs (with spiders), dust, grimy corners, peeling wallpaper and a shower curtain/screen that defied belief. After a reasonable night's sleep there we went down to breakfast to be met by the continential breakfast: a couple of pieces of ham and cheese and some croissants in plastic wrappers. I certainly would not expect to see this on the continent.

We left the following morning without breakfast.

I can only assume the pull of the beautiful city centre and limited accommodation are what keep this place afloat. Shameful.

My wife & I recently stayed at the Carlton Lodge and were considerably less than impressed. The one thing it does have going for it is a very friendly welcome; the owners were hospitable and accommodating as soon as we arrived.

However there were several aspects that you would not expect from even the cheapest and most basic B&B, let alone one costing us £60. Cleanliness levels were very bad. The mass of cobwebs in the front door porch area was an indication; some fittings in the bathroom had so much dust on them it was obvious they hadn't been cleaned in months and there was rubbish left behind a chest of drawers where the tea service was placed.

Our TV did not work when we arrived. The owner was quick to swap the digital box for one from an unoccupied room that did work but he also happened to mention that he was already aware that our own digital box had a fault for several weeks - something you would expect to be sorted before he gave us the key to the room.

The premises generally had quite a run-down look & feel: there was a fairly large hole in one of our bedroom walls behind the head of the bed, a chunk out of the wall visible next to the bathroom door & as one of the rooms was missing its brass number on the door a post-it with its number had been placed on there instead.

Both my wife & I had a bad night’s sleep as the bed were very hard. We were also disappointed that there was no full cooked breakfast available, only a continental one (although we were warned about this when initially booking the room).
As mentioned the owner was very welcoming, friendly and helpful e.g. he pointed out that we were allocated a family room (double bed with separate single) but would only be charged for the normal double upon arrival. However we would have preferred a clean, well presented room – even if it meant it would have been smaller.

  • Liked — The convienient location & friendly welcome.
  • Disliked — The poor standard of cleanliness.

This is not a charming or historic place to stay, but it is perfect for those wanting affordable, clean, and friendly accommodation in Cambridge. It's the cheapest guest house I found within close proximity of the town centre (about a 25min walk). Most rooms have en suite facilities, but I got a small single room without en suite for a little bit less per night (£23 at the time of this review), and I was pleased to notice that the toilet/shower shared by three other single rooms was always clean (and I never had to wait to use it). The owners are lovely people and, without being pushy or overbearing, make themselves available for a chat about the area, or anything else that's on your mind. Clean bed, fresh towels daily, full breakfast included, free wireless internet, TV, but no telephones in the rooms (there is a payphone in the common area). No frills, then, but still an excellent base from which to explore the city.
