Someone has previously reviewed "...were a little surprised to find the restaurant almost empty and totally lacking in atmosphere; the harsh decor..." - it was busy when we went and the atmosphere was good, not great. And I agree, the decor is harsh and the location odd! However, basing my rating on the fundamentals, the service was excellent and the food just fantastic. One of the best restaurant meals I've had and well worth the taxi ride out of the city center for this gem... take your credit card though!!

It is a decent restaurant for a fine dining experience although we personally thought it was a bit overrated and the menu wasn't particularly to my taste having heard all the raving reviews. It still is a very classy place with a good service and we will probably return.

We have visited Alimentum a number of times since it first opened, and always come away with mixed feelings, but somehow end up trying it again. However, it may now have run out of chances. We ate there last night to celebrate our wedding anniversary and felt that it had deteriorated significantly since our last visit a year or so ago. The food is interesting and good and probably the only part of the place that begins to deserve a Michelin star, however the portions on the a la carte menu are very small for the prices charged. The other aspects of the dining experience leave a great deal to be desired and do not remotely compare to other Michelin star restaurants. The bar area used to be furnished with comfortable chairs and low tables but these have been replaced with high bar tables and stools which are not conducive to a relaxed pre-dinner drink. The drinks menu is poorly presented. We had to wait an unacceptably long time for our cocktails, as the single barman had to multi-task showing people to tables etc between making drinks. The drinks are good when they come, but the nibbles (salt and vinegar popcorn and dry cheesy choux balls) are not at all of Michelin standard. The front of house staff were correct but unsmiling, lacking any real investment in what they were doing and clearly not into making the experience for the customer in any way special. They often had to be reminded to remove empty glasses etc. The atmosphere is stark and 'cold' and reminiscent more of a cheap and cheerful restaurant than one with a Michelin star There is a window allowing to customers to see into the kitchen, but the view was littered with empty plastic bowls, used utensils, bits of kitchen paper and so on. We have never experienced this in other Michelin star restaurants with a view of the chefs at work.

Overall a disappointing experience. Although the chef obviously has talent, we think the food is over-priced and we don't believe the restaurant deserves a Michelin star.

My husband and I went for the first time- having read good reviews and given the michelin star we were hopeful for excellence. We were a little surprised to find the restaurant almost empty and totally lacking in atmosphere; the harsh decor and bright lights were not helpful. We were shown to our table whilst the chef sat drinking at the bar in his whites... We were handed the menus to find them stained with food, greasy finger marks and the corners all crumpled up-obviously not a major problem if in a local pub but not really acceptable for a michelin star restaurant. Starters were fine and our waiter friendly. For main I had the halibut-a reasonably delicately flavoured meal with roast butternut puree and pumpkin seeds- but for some ridiculous reason it was covered in the same meaty gravy that my husband had on the pork dish. This was a poor decision by the chef- it completely overwhelmed the dish and how this was thought to complement the fish god only knows. The desserts were a nice idea; my husband having the strawberry and myself the battenburg. If I was to be picky then the sugar tulle filled with amaretto on my dish, was not set enough- it was too sticky and stuck to my teeth as opposed to shattering nicely. Throughout the evening we both visited the loo and (bearing in mind the whole surroundings add to the experience), they were very shabby- empty loo rolls, a dodgy lock and a spillage on the floor in the ladies. Overall the meal was good value for money- it was £135.00 including a glass of wine and the 3 courses each along with amuse bouche and a pallet cleanser. There is no denying that it is in the better end of dining in Cambridge but a michelin star experience it certainly is not. We even left the restaurant without a single goodbye- including from the front of house manager who stood by the empty bar as we left. We were very disappointed, there seemed a total lack of passion in the place and we shall certainly not be back.

Listed as one of the most romantic restaurant in the area, Alimentum provides a lovely ambient for couples. The food is wonderful. We had plaice and grouse for starters and both dishes are melt in the mouth. For mains, we chose the pork and lamb. Once again we thoroughly enjoyed them. The desserts that followed - a different take on sherbet dip dap that puts a smile on your face. The service is excellent. We were sitting opposite one of the kitchen sessions and we got to see some of the chefs de partie at work. All in all a wonderful experience.
