Pleasant room, including a very comfortable bed, modern shower-room and sensible, well-lit desk space. Pleasant, helpful staff - a glitch with the desk lamp was dealt with immediately.
Breakfast pretty good (though if you were taking breakfast as a non-resident it could cost you over £12, so don't!), dinner in restaurant sound. BUT if you are thinking of lunching, avoid the so-called brasserie lunch in the atrium - pre-prepared burger and chips, breaded scampi (nearly all batter and crumbs and little sign of actual scampi) and chips, sandwich and chips, etc etc.... And if you want to eat on Sunday evening you will get the same menu again whether you like it or not (restaurant closed Sunday night).
Depressing to feel that a lovely city like Cambridge is being let down by this kind of thing in what is supposed to be one of its better hotels. You could probably eat better in a motorway service area; or you might eat the same kind of offering, but less expensively . Nice waitresses keep asking anxiously if everything is to your satisfaction - and to answer the question honestly is impossible.
Bar staff do try - but layout of bar makes it difficult for them to deliver orders promptly.
This hotel is in an excellent situation, and has many good points. If it got a grip and did things consistently well it could offer real value and be a winner - but there is some way to go.

Room Tip: Nice view in front but some traffic .

Having stayed in a variety of hotels in Cambridge - this one rates the best for service. On arrival the enthusiastic receptionist welcomed us warmly, and, on departure we received the same enthusiasm and courtesy. The night porter opened the locked door (after midnight) before we reached the threshold and welcomed us with a smile. The restaurant staff were efficient. The breakfast - cooked to order was delicious. On returning from a day trip the car park was full - having stopped to decide what to do next - the porter - who was watching out for such an incident - promptly came to our assistance and opened up another area of the car park for us to use. Such service in a hotel, enhances a guest's experience - a well deserved 5* for the staff of the Gonville.

Picked this hotel to spend the first two nights of a three week vacation touring south England primarily because of its location near to the centre of everything a tourist would want to see in Cambridge. The location did not disappoint. I arranged for the room using Aeroplan points but on registering, there was a problem in that it looked like they were going to charge my credit card. It took a while for them to correct their internal administrative problem, but we finally were assigned a room.
The room assigned was dated. The floor squeaked badly. On our return to the room the first evening, the room key would not work. We were locked out of the room for about ten minutes. It took multiple tries by the staff to get us in and even then it was not fixed until the next day.

Just had 2 nights in room 211 with Tesco vouchers. Great hotel and lovely staff. From the moment we arrived you could tell that this particular hotel have spent a lot of time on training their personnel, it certainly shows. The rooms on our side had been refurbished with walk in shower, only criticism was the hanging rail for clothes, it only protrudes an inch from the wall so all the items end up more crumpled then they were in your case. No wardrobe or rail which is most unusual, not even a single shelf or draw to put any items, ok for a night I suppose but certainly needs looking at. The breakfast is outstanding, must be one of the best i have had for a long time in a hotel and all freshly cooked to order not buffet style like some places. Also Free parking which is a bonus when it is so close to the centre of town. The hotel across the road is charging £12 a night for parking so Best Western missing a trick really. Would certainly return.

Room Tip: Ask for upgraded rooms with walk in shower.

After a very bad experience at the Doubletree Hilton, I supposed this place could not be worse. I was generally happy with the room. There was some noise from a generator outside - although if you keep the window closed it would not stop you from sleeping. On the positive side, they don't charge for internet access. The restaurant looks a bit downmarket, but nice surroundings.

We were looking for a hotel from which to explore Cambridge on a weekend break. The Gonville Hotel was well-situated, with an attractive view over an expanse of parkland. The reception staff were both efficient and friendly, and we were impressed with the quality of both the rooms, and the hotel premises generally. With parking free at the hotel (a very welcome surprise) the car could be left, and a pleasant short walk took us into the heart of the city, and its many attractions. We would certainly recommend this as an excellent base for a visit to Cambridge.

The hotel is an average 3star hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean, toiletries bare minimum, location can't be faulted. What really let's it down is the service. Imagine coming back to your room at 2.30 pm to find that your room has not been made up. I was there for 5 days and every single day I had to haul someone in to make up my room.
Also, the hotel charges for everything. Need a travel adapter? No problem. Buy it for 10 pounds. What about a map of Cambridge? 1 pound please. Ice? Buy it!
No turn down service, bead spread laid out crooked, toiletries replenished only at whim.
